Anti-war protesters throw in the towel

Facing 20 degree weather and potential for up to a foot of snow. The anti-war protesters camped outside of the administration building at Northern Michigan University decided their cause wasn't worth it. This after claiming they were going to be there until the whole thing was over.
Maybe the rest of them around the country and world should follow suit.
Fuck it. More snow to keep the hill open a while longer.

The vast majority of protesters are just as 'American' as you claim to be... they're upholding the beliefs that they feel are the best course of action for the America that we all love. Of course there are a few rotten apples... like the pro-war rally at U-M where students spit and trampled on the flags of the UN and France.

What's wrong with flag burning? I'm 100% serious here, I'm sincerely asking the question. I've seen people burn Canadian flags at protests, and somehow it always comes across as a statement against government policies and actions. So what makes that statement so bad?

hey guess what we have 'free speech' in this country under which i believe flag burning should fall. it may be disrespectful but there are a lot worse things that happen under 'free speech'. the only thing that upsets me abou tthe protesters is if they do not at least support the troops. i personally was against the war but i do support the troops over there now. and guess who just RESIGNED Richard Perle, one of the major players in us going to war, smells fishy to me.

If you burn the flag of your country. You should be deported. Enough said. End of the matter. It is one thing to carry signs and protest. But to burn the symbol of your country. The flag is to be treated with respect. If you burned a flag in front of ANY US veteren, they would either weep as if you killed a loved one or kill you. Either one. A flag is not just a peice of cloth.

Andy, the fact that the flag is the symbol of the country is the exact reason why they do burn them, think about it. What better way to protest against your own nation and your political leaders than to destroy the very emblem by which they stand. Makes perfect sense.

You can't be right if you haven't said anything. So tell me WHY Andy is right. I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm seriously wondering WHY flag burning is such a horrible act. Anyone care to explain?

' Patriotism ' Is patriotism the favor of putting lives of one's country in danger for a cause not needed? Don't tell me the cause isn't needed, thats a matter of opinion. But if thats what people believe, and htey firmly believe, then i don't see how wanting to save lives of their soldiers for a cause they don't believe in can be ' unpatriotic'.
Violence is not 'patriotic'...

I'm going to ignore that, as I'm sure it's not directed to me. I've asked approximately 4 times now, so I'm going to ask ONE MORE TIME. WHY IS FLAG BURNING SUCH A BAD/EVIL THING????

the reason andy won't tell us why flag burning is so wrong arises from the fact that he's got nothing.. there is no reason that flag burning be considered some insane capital offence. your government has conditioned you to think that a simple red white and blue article is some abstract sign of prosperity and democracy, when in fact, it's nothing more than some dyed fabric and stitches.
what's the point in having freedom of speech if a nation's citizens aren't allowed to show signs of opposition in times of true organized chaos?

i have pride: i am proud that i have the ability to speak out against unfair policies. not only do i have the ability and right to do so, but i exercise these abilities.
i have integrity: so much so that when the body appointed by myself and other citizens puts into power policies that do not reflect my opinion, i stand up and fight.
i have a sense of identity: being canadian in part means not being american, which in part means being selfless, something that is lost on many americans.
is it not somewhat suspicious that those who stand to gain the most from 'liberating' iraq are also the ones that support this invasion?
one last question, do those so opposed to flag burning feel as though burning the confederate flag is as horrible as burning the american flag?

it's still a flag that means something to those that fly it. are you conceding that a flag is a relative and completely subjective piece of material? well then, you should have no problem when faced with images of the red white and blue ablaze.

Wow, someone has a big national ego. So... all Canadians are better than all Americans? And all Americans are selfish?
Mabye I should organize a Canadian flag burning. I'm sure that you wouldn't say a word then, would you.

something that is lost on MANY americans. i never said all, and i would think that you, andy, of all people, would read each and every post thoroughly so as to ensure that somebody isn't misquoted.. after all, you're the one that continues to object to misquotes, citing that posting on NS is now a waste of time because of the occurence of misquotes.
as for organizing a canadian flag burning, be my guest.. i just hope that you have reasons other than 'because sweetcoz says it's ok' to burn the canadian flag.

wasn't this about burning your own countries flag? so seeing how that the people burning the confederate flag were not confederates, then it has no relevance in this conversation. whats wrong with burning a flag??? umm, its a major blow on your country. The Flag symbolizes the country, so if you burn the flag youre buring the country.

'I find it ironic that the 'anti-military' protesters in my town don't seem to notice that they are protesting the very group that is defending their right to hate the military.'
Again, an American gets it wrong. I see it every time I watch CNN, every time I read stuff on MSNBC, and every time I talk to someone who's actually American. Anti-war people are NOT military hating losers. They 'love' and 'support' their military as much as anyone else. They're also as 'patriotic' as you are. They also see the bigger picture, and understand what's going on in the world a lot more than most people in the US right now. Patriotism has nothing to do with your views on the war, nor your level of troop support.
As for Andy's 'explanation' of why flag burning is oh so very bad, well...he never actually said anything other than ''A flag is not just a peice of cloth.'. Do you care to explain that statement? Here's my understanding of it: A flag is a symbol of your country. As such, it is the PERFECT symbol to easily destroy when you don't agree with government policies or actions. In fact, flag burning makes perfect sense. However, there is a line that shouldn't be crossed, and that line is crossed when you burn flags because you just don't 'like' another country. Burn my flag because you don't agree with Canadian government policies regarding the American war on Iraq, and I'm ok with that. Burn my flag because you have a personal dislike of my country, and I will make sure you get what you deserve for performing such an IGNORANT and STUPID act. As for Andy's comment regarding arguing with retards, I now understand that it was actually directed towards me, and of course others. I'm actually not too surprised to see him write that, considering the low quality of argument he can post. Makes me wonder who the 'retard' really is...

hey googoo you shithead, this cause is fucking definietely needed, saddam has already made it obvious that he has chemical weapons and if we let him be he will have nuclear weapons and he will sell his weapons to terrorists, who will kill many americans, so we are saving the thousands or millions of americans that might die and going after him now, instead of after he bombs us

^ You know he has chemical weapons because you sold them to him. You don't know that he has nuclear weapons, and most of the world's leading authorities on nuclear arms proliferation agree that Iraq was not close to fabricating nuclear weapons at all. There is absolutely NO proof that Hussein's regime would sell weapons to terrorists. If the US was so worried about terrorism, it would do something about the millions of other sources of nuclear material and start PEACEFUL negociations with North Korea. Bombing Iraq solves NOTHING.

What a nice, polite way of telling anyone who doesn't agree with you to shut the fuck up. Nice try. Antiwar opinions are more necessary now than ever before. How will you feel about your administration starting another war in your name? I know the US doesn't feel too strongly about Iran, why not blow them up??? It's pretty damn easy to start wars and bomb people when you're doing on the other side of the earth, but I bet you didn't like it too much when 19 terrorists destroyed the world trade centre towers and approximately 3000 people along with them. That pain and fear is what Iraquis feel EVERY TIME the US drops bombs on their cities and attacks their homeland. Now try to tell me antiwar opinions don't matter.

Being an Australian and not having has much blind, jingoistic pride in my flag as US citizens seem to have i don't quite understand the how flag burning is such a heinous crime. Anti-war protesters in Australia have been burning Australian and US flags as well and that pisses me off, not because of any pride in my flag (which i do have because while 'a flag is not just a piece of cloth' a country is more than just a piece of cloth) but because burning the flag means we in the anti-war movement have appropriated our national flag as the symbol of the pro-war movement which pisses me of because i am just as australian as them.

And just so you know, you're more unsafe now than you were before your country illegally invaded Iraq. More intelligent foreign policy would help your country a lot more than another war. Enjoy having a minimum of $75 BILLION worth of taxes spent on bombs instead of helping secure your homeland. I sincerely hope it doesn't take another major terrorist attack for the US to learn that it's going about things the wrong way.

Like it was not worth bitching about of the war in Vietnam? Just wait till you get drafted, and you can fight for the free world in Syrian deserts. Good thing you have the priviledge to die for your home, your country, your religion, President Bush, Exxon mobile... Go for it GI.
