People that say that park skiers can't ski (Rant)

Ok so earlier today, I saw the thread that critisized Schoening, saying that he can only ski park and not BC.
I think that ideas such as this need to stop. Most freeskiers (not all), have been skiing since they were very young, as early as 3 years old. And most start to freeski around the age of 14 (sometimes younger, sometimes older), but thats 11 years of non-park skiing. This obviously means that freeskiers can ski alot more than park, since they have so much experience outside the park. Another thing is alot of freeskiers used to race for a couple years. That gives them alot of experience with carving and helping their overall skiing ability.
That is why it pisses me off so much when people critisize kids saying that they can only ski park. Just because kids choose to ski mostly park doesn't mean that they can't ski outside the park, it's just that they mostly choose not to, which is totally up to them.
And there's my rant. I didn't really get all the points I wanted to, but you get the idea.

here's the thing: a lot of park skiers have bad technique outside the park. Park rats tend to crouch, their counterrotation is off, and they don't use their poles. But they rip the park! Just because someone can't destroy every aspect of the sport does not mean they can't ski. It's kind of a weird feud we've developed between BC and park skiers. I'm just glad we don't have ski jumping, tele skiing, cross country skiing, aerials, moguls, etc feuds.

if schoening's style is what not knowing how to ski looks liek than i want to start forgetting...... and as far as skiing outside the park... i dont give a shit what my technique is ... sur i raced for 6 years and could probably ski a course alright if i had to ... but i really dont liek it... therefore i dont give a shit ... i would forget alot of my carving ability's in a heartbeat for freestylin manuvers

I hate when people do this to. I have skied since i was 3, i raced from when i was 8 to when i was 12. And now i ski purely park. I have been told by numerous people that i should becaome a more well rounded skier and stop focousing on park so much, practice other shit ect. ect. when i could kick there ass outside park. Just because i wear baggy clothes and have twins and slide rails apparently makes me not able to ski outside park. what the fuck.

I've never really skied park...only taking freestyle to the BC and I LOVE IT
I skied whistler park and it was hella fun
now I want to ski a shitload more park...
I'm in the EXACT SAME BOAT as schoening even down to the location (WA).
So I get what he's saying.
Except he skis more park than me.

well, no matter how bad a park skier can seem at skiing anything else, think of this. a few years back, there were pro snowboarders who couldn't even make a single turn but were being hooked up with every imaginable endorsment. all they knew how to do was ride down a drop-in and grease the fuck out of gnarly ass rails.

I'd say that kids that ski park, on average, ski better all around then other skiers. At least in Michigan.

your an idiot... park doesnt give you all round skills racing and moguls do. I know alot of mogul skiers and big mountain riders that are better in the park than 99% of you but they choose not to ski park very often how many jibbers can do cab 9s and ski a real big mountain run?? I know at least 4 guys on the big mountain world tour that can do cab 9s and Cory ZIla is a better jibber than all of you and hes a big mountain skier. When im talking big mountain im not talking about a bowl full of 12 inches of powder in colorado im talking a big chute in Chamonix or a big spine filled face in Alaska thats real big mountain.
Moguls produces the best all round skiers out there IE. Seth (he raced as well) Pep,Tanner, Gurlain Chichreit (the best competative big mountain skier ever) and the most underrated skier on the planet SEb Michaud

so you're saying that you're only a good skier if you race or do moguls? You're dumb.

^moguls and racing help with technique, such as carving, so that's what i think he means.
and it's true, there are people who just can't ski outside of the park even though they choose to ski park. sure they can get from A to B, but they don't do it very well

mabye some people dont want to ski other stuff than park?
bitching at them is kinda like going up to some pro skateboarder and saying he sucks at longboarding.
its just stupid to bitch about this stuff, i ski park pretty much all the time, i do alot of bc kickers and stuff too, and i dont give a shit about my "form" and all that crap. i dont enjoy "skiing" because skiing to me means just that, going down a hill making turns and stuff, all i care about is park really.
and you dont see us talking shit about people like seth becase they dont ski park as much, and we dont bitch about old people skiing down groomers either, so why do people have to cry about us?

I know a lot of excellent park skiers who aren't too hot in powder or B.C. or even going real fast on groomers, & Bumps.
Its a whole different game

im pretty sure your a huge fucking idiot. Obviously most of this site, if they ski 95% park or 5% park cant ski a huge chute in chamonix. If you seriously think that the ability to do that is needed to be a "good" or "weel rounded skier" you need to seriously re think the subject. Most people dont even have access to a chute! never min a huge one in chamonix.

...just something to think about, but it kinda takes more skill to learn to ski park then just to ski. not only do u need to ski all mountain, but u know tricks and how to grind that look impossible to a all mountain skier

plenty of "park rats" ski very well outside the park. but there are way too many who have horrific turning technique. and that is just sad. learn to ski before you learn to jump or slide a rail. right now, most of the pros who ski mostly park all came from a racing or moguls background. they all can ski outside of the park. the problem now is that it seems fewer and fewer kids are going through these programs before hitting the park.

i think that this is true but it depends how long you have been skiing because the longer you have been doing it the chances that befor park you were a racer.well that is the case at my mountain and there are way to many people who cant ski

Ya i think to the other people like parents and racers they dont think we can ski cause all we do is sit in the park... but yes we can truly ski and if your in the park and cant ski you should go out learn to ski then comeback and park it up

i have been approached numerous times asking if i race, if id like to race for so and so, etc. im pretty much a park rat (strictly cause im in the midwest currently). i find just about all aspects of skiing very fun (cept moguls, i cant imagine why anyone would find those fun), from hittin tech rails to layin down high G, shoulder draging turns, i love it all.
however, surprisingly, here in OH i dont see many kids with the bad technique outside the park, so its not a huge annoyance to me, but whenever i go to a biger resort, i do see it occasionally, and whatever. its thier loss. skiing, like anything, just gets more fun with the better you get. if your a well rounded skier, it opens up more possiblities, and eventually itll bite um in the ass. but whatever, as long as peeps are havin fun.

its the same beef that was going on in snowboarding in the early 90's when parks came out. the old school purists are intimidated by something new, so they put it down. these are probably the same people that wear their correct size pants at the hips, listen to phil collins and voted for Bush. park rats arent focusing on a perfectly linked carve beacuse theyre too busy gorilla stylin their shit. i have much respect for skiers who can ride big mountain but thats not what the new film companies are shooting. look, im not saying go to the park and have at it on day one. thats not right either. the fundamentals of skiing are a must, but the whole point of freestyle is its FREE style. ski how you want to. knocking someone beacause they have a wider stance, make wider turns, and dont use theyre poles correctly is wack. so excuse me if i dont have the form a middle aged ski nazi from Chamonioux. thats just not me.

yea your right girl! thats exactly it. its like nowadays kids are just learning enough to ski down to the park without fallin down, then they spend all day in the park. and some of them are sick at jumps and stuff, but they cant actually ski to save their lives, and thats annoying.

See though.......i think we schould ride everything.....kids who say " I just ride park" are ignorant. Man there hill is big and you can use it all. You can olie off of steeps.......drops....wall rides...or just ride a run for fun. Man i just love going on a Green run.....and butter around all the people who are learning....and skiing switch. Haha i love it when the little kids are " Mom i want to do that.....i want to do what that guy is doing...why can't i ski backwards"

whoa whoa whoa. not really. i think that alot of the kids just picking up skiing at age 12 and going rite to the park first day first run and have no idea how to turn or ski fast yet they still think they are better than me cuz i raced and bumped a while ago, thats fucked up. aight.

You can do everything in the backcountry that you can do in the park other than rails.
Park rats can ski...just not all of them are good.
Me myself would be a park rat if there was a park where I skied, yet I've raced for 7 years and skied for 12 or 11, I don' remember.
Just letting everyone know, people who only ski park can only get good at one thing: park.
Nothing else, because the hills aren't steep where the parks are. You get good balance, but really. You don't need good posture. That's why so many 12 year olds who just start skiing can start skiing park right away.

i've been skiing for probably 12 years or so...I'm on center mounted foils and I hardly even touch the park. I much prefer woods, bumps, and powder...honestly I don't understand this passion for the park that some of you have, maybe it's because I'm not the best park skier, but I think its more fun to find creative natural shit to jib then to hit manmade stunts. "Park rats" should learn to appreciate the whole mtn. (or at least check it out for a day). Hopefully they'll see what theyre missing.

i wish we had tht in south east michigan. We ski on old landfills that they molded into mountains. So if u compare skiing 20 second runs through icey artfical snow and skiing a somewhat decent park then u really dont have a choice other than to ski park in the midwest. i would love the oppurtunity to be able to ski natural jibs and shit, we just dont have any...
