Anybody ever cut thumb holes in their hoodies?

Yeah, it is a dumb question, but I don't want to really fuck up a good hoodie.

Do any of you guys do this?

If so, where do you cut the thumb holes? On the cuff or right above it?

Does the hole end up getting torn more and more as you wear it?

I know it is dumb, but it would be good to know before I potentially mess up a good sweatshirt.

on the cuff or above the cuff??? I was trying to remember where the thumb holes are on my friends element hoodie.

The sew around thing is probably a good idea.

when i was five, i had this multi colored hoodie, it was the early 90s... orange sleeves purple/pink hood, blue torso, green pocket in the front, wore it all the time, you could tell cause both sleeves had snot stains all the way to the elbow, one day, im runnin outa kindergarden and i catch the sleeve on one of them door handles you find at schools, put a hole right through the sleeve where the thumb was, i started rockin it by accident, nervous tick or what have you, point is, that was dope, you "cutting" holes for comfort or aesthetic appeal, makes you a weird flamer

a couple of old fox racing hoodys came with holes in the thumbs... they were on the cuff... yea they arent worth it. itll look crappy if you try to cut them yourself. dont ruin a good sweatshirt.

I did it the other day. The sleeves were looking a little short, so I put the holes in. I like it. I just put the hoodie on, and made the sleeves straight, so I could see where my thumbs would be. I marked the spot with a sharpie. (small line or something) then just cut a little hole with a razor, and made the slit longer using scissors. then lightly singe the threads so they dont fray or anything. Then sew around the rim of the hole. IT should work fine.

Thumb holes are becoming fashion standard and many major labels are using them, especially in ski line clothing. If you don't like them, role the cuffs up and deal with it.

It makes perfect sense to want to give your hoodie thumbholes. It gives a unique style and comfort to the hoodie that makes it your own. Especially in colder environments. Allows you to put your sleeves into your gloves comfortably to transfer warmth and keep your hands warm. Perfect for cycling, skiing, snowboarding, skating, or just walking on your commute. I had them put on my hoodies and on my jacket. Very helpful when the temperature drops into the Teens and single digits with wind chills in the negatives (Basic Chicago winter).

Advice for doing your own, unless you are handy with needle and thread, don't try to do it yourself. Take the hoodie to your cleaners that can do alterations. Make sure you ask if they know how to make thumb holes, also you should be sure the hoodie sleeves go almost past your pinky finger. This gives you the extra coverage and won't pull the seams at the shoulders. Have them do the cut in the Cuff, below the seam. Make sure you line up where your thumb will come through on the cuff. If you have too, cut on a old hoodie or long sleeve T-shirt to figure out where your thumb fits properly so you can mark it on the cuff you want to use for thumb holes.

I would only use that function while skiing because it would keep the sleeves down. The thing is, you have to get longer sleeves, cutting on the cuff or above will stretch out your sleeves every time you put your thumb through, if the sleeve fits well, like if you are an xl go 2xl or 3xl so you get the longer sleeve length.

If you cut holes, go on the cuff or above, make them even cuts and measure and mark where you want to cut on both sleeves. I have made hoodies in the past from scratch and measuring twice cutting once is the number one thing I took away from that. Sew around the cuts to reinforce them so you won't tear it wider every time you move.

Its creative, but it only makes sense for skiing and sports, it worthless and defiantly not worth the time or the hoodie if you just wear it around.

i used to when my sweatshirts got shrunk because im tall and didnt want my sleeves going halfway up my long arms.

For better or worse, the hoodie is long gone now, probably donated to someone in West Africa by way of Goodwill. It was pretty sweet- was a plain grey hoodie that I sewed a couple patches on to and then added thumb holes. I wore it all the time for several years in college.

In other news, I came here today looking to see if a few cults I used to belong to were still alive but sadly they are dead. Was going to see if anyone from back in the day was still around.

I still see one of my NS friends all these years later. We still ski together, still bike together, still adventure together. Saw another over Christmas and caught some pow together for the first time in 10+ years. Everyone else drifted off into the ether.

Anyway, glad I could deliver on this thread.
