America did not BRING SADDAM TO POWER, they were one of many countrys supplying weapons to him in the Iran Iraq war of the 80's. However, we supplied very few weapons compared to France (who still DOES supply weapons as evidanced by the Mirage fighter planes Iraq has) and Germany... consequently two nations who are staying out. They helped make him powerful yet they refuse to help take him down when they are even more responsible...

The reason why they are supplying saddam with weaponry, is because they trade it for oil. I know france is one of the biggest customers for iraqi oil. And yes, reagan, did supply iraq with arms, helped train the republican guard(back then), and gave saddam sole dictatorship of iraq, because back then, we were allies, with saddam against iran. Now these things i now know for a fact, i did a research paper on middle eastern conflicts.

actually, america did put saddam in power, or at least, they helped quite a bit. Saddam was just a hitman in the Bath party, he even tryed to assassinate iraq's former ruler, though that failed. saddam payed frequent visits to the american embacy in iraq. since iraq was considered to be in russian hands, the CIA helped out saddam by killing many key members of the existing government. saddam then rose to second in command of the country. when the leader died, saddam assumed leadership and killed many of his closest friends to keep that power. so, in conclusion, though saddam is a 'bad man' the united stats actually put him in power.

no the US didn't put him in power, it sounds like he took over after someone died and then killed everyone around who might protest against his rule. Thats quite different then the US putting him in power. Plus now with the benifit of hindsight we can see it was a bad move but at the time our biggest concern was russia and that helped to deal with that problem.

No, the biggest problem was the lack of vision and shortsightedness of US foreign policy. It still is. Too bad very few Americans actually understand that.

Saddam wanted the oil in Kuwait so he could have more influence in OPEC and therefore fuck around with oil prices and shit like that and thats how the US got the oil after the first gulf war, they maintaned the status quo. It wouldn't surprise me if after this war they say to the new government of Iraq 'we're only going to back you up if you don't join OPEC and sell us your oil really cheap'.

Sweet cut and paste job. Now take a look at most of the countries on that list. When the US has to pad its allies list with countries like Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, something's not right. How about Eritria and Ethiopia, both looking for US support in a boundary dispute. Most countries on that list are there because they want something for the US, or because they're getting something from the US in exchange for their support, much in the same way that the US tried, and failed, to bribe Turkey into letting them use military bases in Turkish territory to launch strikes against Iraq.

Furthermore, anyone who's on that list due to aid or loans given out by the US government was BRIBED. well it may be that they don't need the military or political support to defeat Iraq, but if they can say that they have 40+ countries supporting the war, it provides an argument against war protesters, and helps uplift the American Image. Also, whats wrong with America wanting cheaper oil, even if it is only a minor issue?... Once America has set up their nice little democracy in iraq, they will begin selling oil to themselves and others. But insted of all the profits going straight to Saddam, maybe some of the money will infiltrate back into Iraq's economy helping out some of the Iraqi population, 2/3 of who depend on UN humanitarian Aid just to survive. Give the US a chance.
