Helmet laws and motorcycles

because of what happen to ben roetlisburger of the shitty steelers (beer with me i am a browns fan), a debate started in my office about the helmet laws in pa.
in pa it is legal to ride a motorcycle with out a helmet, the one secrtary was complaing that the law should require helmets and this wouldnt happen. my arguement is that just because you dont have to wear a helmet dosnt mean you shouldnt. if you dont wear a helmet and splatter your brains on the street it is your own dumbass fault, i call it natural selection, survival of the fittest let the stupid people die.

I saw that on the news last night, I had no idea that you didn't have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle in PA. Crazy stuff, apparently he was aware he didn't have much up stairs so he decided he didn't need to protect it.

They just changed the helmet law in PA a few years back. Here's the deal; you ride without a helmet, you're an idiot. I don't care if you live in NH and want to 'live free or die'. If you hit the pavement without a helmet, You will crack your skull and the small amount of brain matter that you do have, will be on the road.

if badass means retarded, then sure.
I was on the highway the other day, going under the speed limit cause it was raining and I got hit in the mask with a bird (Second time this has happened). Even if there's nobody around and you're going under the limit, things such as this, rocks, big bugs, can all fuck you up without a helmet.

while i do believe that poeple who ride motorcycles should wear helmets i don't think that a person should be required to wear one.
and whoever said that stupid people deserve to die is an idiot. everyone does something studip in their lives.

I agree whole-heartedly. I had this debate in a class at school, and most people love the seatbelt and helmet laws because they "save lives." I say fuck that. If you're not smart enough to realize that hurtling through your windshield, or head-butting the pavement at 70mph is going to kill you, then I really dont want you out there in the gene pool.
One girl in my class said "yeah but what if your dad got killed on a motorcycle because he wasn't wearing a helmet? then wouldn't you think it should be mandatory?" and I said no. If someone with a wife/significant other and kids at home doesn't value his family enough to protect his dome when he rides, then I'm sorry for his family, but he deserves whatever happens to him. I dont believe that anyone should have the right to MAKE you wear a helmet or seatbelt. That being said, I always buckle up, and wear a helmet; i'm not a dumbass.

well put i agree that if someone doesnt have the sense enough to wear a helmet or seatbelt fuckem, on the other side there should be laws requiring car companys to have seatbelts and that they meet certain standards, as well as laws making helmits meet certain standards.
but if your stupid enough not to wear um fuck ya

I agree with the helmet part of your comment, but as for seatbelts- IF there is more than one person in a car and one person isn't wearing a seatbelt and the car crashes, the person without a seatbelt can become a projectile and really fuck up the other people in the same car who are doing the right thing. I've heard of it happening a couple times.

it shouldn't be required, but they should be worn, justlike everybody else said. but you are statisticly more likely to get hit by a car while walking then while on a bike, so should they make it illegal to walk without a helmet? or for that matter, on occasion cars crash into homes, should you wear a helmet while watching tv, just in case a land rover comes through the wall?

required where i'm from here in ontario so i think when ur riding basically the fastest production bike you should probably wear helemet and jacket when the bike is capable of doin 300km/h plus
(busa)
just my 2 cents

Are you likely to fall on your head going 60 mph when your walking? didn't think so.

im from pittsburgh and heres what i think.... you should always wear a helmet but i can understand not wearing one on a harley or something youre just cruising on... dumbass ben though was riding a sick ridiculously fast bike... and should have the common sense to realize how important he is and how important a helmet is.

That has nothing to do with it. The performance of his bike doesn't matter. When the accident occured, he was riding the speed limit. And the type of bike shouldn't matter when wearing a helmet either. I don't care if you're riding a crotch rocket, a cruiser, or a trail bike. You need a helmet.
I don't know what the fuck was going through the minds of the law makers here when they voted and passed that. Some idiots presented "evidence" that a helmet doesn't matter in an accident and only makes people retarded instead of killing them. And they would rather die, than become a vegetable.
Well... yes that may be true on 65 mph highway crashes. But what about guys like Ben who are riding 25-30 mph around town? 95% of his injuries were taken out on his face. If he was wearing a full face helmet, he would've honostly walked away from that crash.
But the state of PA passed a law requiring that every person riding in a metal cage known as an automobile must wear a seat belt. Does this make any fucking sense???
I don't care how great of a rider you are. You cannot control what other people do. Ben did absolutely nothing wrong (according to the law), other than being a fucking dumbass. He was cut off by a woman who made a traffic error. He cannot control that. He must take the necessary precautions to be a safe as possible.
And as far as I'm concerned Ben is just as responsible for what happened as the woman is. He has a responsiblity to himself, his family, his friends, the Steelers organization, and the city of Pittsburgh. You have to make responsible adult decisions, and not use the law as a scapegoat.

i agree. it should be one's own smart choice to wear a helmet. it really is too bad that this had to happen, it's terrible when it happens to anyone. but people should start to realize how important helmets can be in saving your life, and dismiss their thoughts that helmets are "uncool". uncool? well you know what is cool? living.

im pretty sure i just said i thought helmets were really important. it just adds to the fact that he was riding one of the fastest bikes ever made and didnt think to wear a helmet. yeah obviously its ridiculous theres no helmet law.

During the MSF course, they told us that 80% of all fatalities due to head injuries occur when part of the head from the ears down (jaw, mouth, etc) hit the pavement; 75% of all accidents where full face helmets are worn, the people survive.

i dont ride motorcycles or anything so i dont have much of a say, but it seems to me that a helmet wouldnt do much and if youre in an accident its more worrying about breaking your neck than hitting your head on the ground. im probably completly wrong though. but rothlisberger was stupid, and i say that as a steelers fan.

I just posted numbers above, those are pretty accurate as of 3 years ago. Major cause of fatality in a motorcycle wreck is hitting your jaw on the cement.

helmets are mandatory up until 18 here. which makes sense.. at 18, you should be smart enough to realize you need to protect your head. and you shouldn't need to be told to protect your own existence. one would think that's a given..

stranger things have happened. and i was not exactly being serious. and you aren't "likely" to fall going 60 either. the only reason 90% of motorcycle accidents occur is because of some dumb middle aged bitch chatting on her cell while driving an automatic suv and watching last weeks episode of sex and the city on the tv built into the fucking steering wheel.

Very true, but if you're on the highway and some dumb bitch cuts you off, you're still going to fall going 50+ mph and land on the cement, whether or not it's your fault.

thats true, but elaborating on my earlier post, you are more likely to get hit by a car while walking then to get in a motorcycle accident. so you should wear a helmet while walking too. im not saying its right to ride without a helmet, i would never do it, but yeah.. i'm tired.

haha, no worries dude. I got your point, I was just making one of my own. As soon as I put my helmet on, my mindset changes to "Everybody is trying to kill me", it's crazy but so effective.

thats a good mentality to have, most of the people who ride around here are more in the "i'm invincible" mindset, and they do such dumb shit. nose wheelies through a busy intersection during rush hour. can't get much less safe than that.

I don't believe it. I'd like to see a source on that. And to me it sounds like an improper statistic. The volume of pedestrians is much greater than that volume of motorcyclists.

it shouldn't matter if a law is in place or not... If you're riding, wear a helmet, no question about it. you look more un-cool not wearing a helmet than actually wearing one. Everyone needs to step back and realize how important their lives are, not just to yourself, but to everyone who cares about you. I'm all for dangerous and fuckin stupid risks, but seatbelts and helmets are just a smart idea.

People should just wear helmets after looking around at all the consequences and injuries caused by motorcycle accidents. my uncle was in a bike crash about 8 or 9 months ago. he wasn't wearing a helmet and now hes in a nursing home. he can't talk or eat yet and might not be able to walk ever again. so wear a helmet even if it makes you look like a dumbass. its simple.

if you're riding a bike, you should be wearing the following
1) Helmet
2) long sleeve top, preferably leather reinforced bike jacket
3) pants, not fucking shorts.
4) close-toe shoes.
if you are not, you are fucking dumb, and if you get into an accident, you will get fucked up. Whether you need a skin graft, or a new pair of pants after a crash is up to you, so make the right choice.

not baggy pants either, tight leather or tight jeans, because loose pants create alot of friction if you fall and they can fuck you up even worse.

so true dude, my uncle got into a bad accident 2 years ago. he hit the pavement going 70 and had to have a couple skin grafts on his ankle. The bike jacket saved his back and arms.
