The Omen - A Review and Commentary

I would like to start and say that there are spoilers in here so don't read this if you're going to see it and don't want me to ruin it for you.
*******************************************
This evening I took a date out to see The Omen. And honostly I'm having mixed emotions about the movie. It was enjoyable but overall I was a little disappointed.
-The High Points-
There were quite a few "out of no where" surprises that were quite scarey. My date I did actually jump when the dogs came while Thorn and the Photographer were in the cemetary. The imagery is pretty good, especially in the dream sequences. I was disturbed quite a few times. I'd say the best scene in the entire film was when Mrs. Baylock killed Katherine. It was quite a slow and emotionally traumatic death. I will say that the writers did an excelent job encorporating modern current events into the story. The star falling from the sky = Columbia crash. Great flood that kills 200,000 people = Pacific Tsunami etc.
-The Low Points-
Ok there are quite a few that stick out in my mind. First and foremost, did anyone else find the subplots to be extremely confusing? I was left asking myself these questions:
1) What did that weird priest have anything to do with the story besides warning Thorn? Like he was present when Damien was born or something. And practically stalked Thorn. He also said that when Kathrine was pregnant again that the baby was important. Well Damien succeeded in killing the baby... ok then what? And why did he have the 666 birthmark as well?
2) What the fuck is up with the t-rex skeleton in Damiens mothers grave? I guess the nurses at the hospital didn't notice they were helping a reptile give birth.
3) Why would the people at the hospital kill Thorn's real son? Whats the motive? And why would they want to swap him for Damien.
-Conclusion-
The beginning was a little slow but it picked up. I really think the movie need ed to be longer to explain things. Other than the whole basic anti-christ/armagedon plot line i was pretty confused. Perhaps I'm just an idiot and some of you can help to explain what I missed.

I was thinking the same things as you.. wondering about those points..
What I've come up is:
The preist is some kind of evil guy.. who pretended to be a preist so he could be at the birth of damien and help save him.. he probably killed the real son.. and then he wanted to repent and be good, so he tried to track down the dad and warn him.. so he wouldn't, as he repeated, "go to hell.." etc.
As for the skull in the grave.. it was a skeleton of a jackal.. which is what the devil son's mother is.
Other than that.. I didn't like it because it was jumpy, not scary. You're right, the only scary part was whe Damien's mother was killed by evil housekeeper woman. It was a good scene.. and the other house keeper jumping off the roof. Apparently that was in the preveiws.. but I never saw it.. so I thought it was good.
One more thing - what did that dog have to do with the first housekeeper's death? Why did she kill herself? Because Damien had control over her.. i dont' know..
Over all - a good movie to see .. but nothing out of the ordinary.

Ahh that thing about the preist makes sense. That explains why his room (if you want to call it that) was the way it was. And that helps to clear up the bit about damiens real mother.
He would've needed to be present and help in order for that to take place. Because there was no way that jackal gave birth normally in the hospital. I mean look at the damn thing. When he called Damiens mother a jackal, I thought he was using it metaphorically.
I think the dogs represented demons or more specifically the devil himself. Especially when the nanny killed herself. Damien waved to it. And yeah i think damien had control over her the same what he had control over mrs baylock.

The dad is a fucking idiot, that's all I have to say. Seriously, all the shit he was told comes true and even after his wife is killed, he still is all, "I'm not going to kill my son (that's not even really my son but some adopted bastard from a fucking jackal)." But yeah at the end, that's when I knew who Damien was supposed to be! George Dubya Bush.

i havent seen this one yet, but i think if you watch the original, which i thought was pretty scary, some of your questions about the plot might be answered. i didnt find the original hard to follow in the least.

I've got some answers for you:
1)The priest knew that damien would be the son of satan, the beast, because he was there at the birth, and would'be seen both the mark and his mother(the jackal) at the same time. The Priest was there to watch over damien and see to it that he never became the "beast".
2)The "beast" would be born of a jackal for a mother and a human father. Read the bible. it helps to know the topic
3)IN the original movie, the other son was to be a good son, as opposed to the evil son, and would kill the evil son. The nurses and people in the hospital, according to the storyline, were Damiens caretakers, and were under the employment of satan, so they killed the only one who could stop the beast.

Yeah, i thought it would be lame to see that movie any other day other than 6/6/06 so i went and saw it that night.
I cant really say I liked that movie, it was just to damn pointless.
it kinda felt like a let down, and just some big money making rip off.
the actual movies plot was honestly terrible.
The plot:
boys born
he's the devil's son
he's wierd
preist tells family that their son is gunna kill them
son kills them
the end.

Separate ass cheeks, remove stick.
If you read what I said above, I knew the priest said damiens mother was a jackal... BUT, I thought he was using it metaphorically. People have been known to call other people jackals as a derogetory term. I figured she might have been a prostitute or a gypsie or something. Or even a woman posessed by a demon.
Hoho did a nice job of explaining the rest of it.
How would anyone actually understand the whole thing about the hospital without and supplemental info? I figured damien was born in the hospital. Do you really think i thought they brought a dog into the maternity ward, and oops oh shit theres a baby human? "Oh I have an idea, lets kill that Thorn baby and swap the dog baby for him!" Doesn't make sense.
It needed to be more clear that the hospital was manipulated by satan to allow damiens birth, and to kill the child, so damien could swap.
