That was such a bad call, you could see the italian player look at the dude and PLAY INTO him and dive.
Did i once say the italians were diving this game? no. i said the italian player dove on that last play and he friggin did.
The aussie player kicked at the ball. no way was that a penalty

Italy didn't control the first half at all. It was a mere cointoss to see who did. Italy made some great set ups, but I feel Australia did equally as well in control of the game. Australia definately set the pace in that game. They had a much higher pace than Italy likes to play at, and that killed Italy. Italy was fatigued, and it was obvious.
That call was horrible, (referr to my previous post.) If that game had gone into OT like it should have, there is no doubt Australia would have won.

Italy had at least 5 great chances before the dismissal, Australia had one and even that might've been after a foul. Therefore I ask, who was the better team before the red card? Whoever says Australia loses all the respect in my eyes because evidently he doesn't know anything about football.
After the red card (which was an idiotic thing for Materazzi to do, although a straight red is questionable) Australia pressured but didn't really create any super scoring chances. Italy couldn't do anything offensice because they tried to defend so tightly and it succeeded, it would've probably gone to penalties without the Grosso foul.
Yes, the Grosso foul was very questionable too. The defender lied there in the ground and it isn't clear wheather he actually used his hands or not. Tough decision for the referee. However, I've seen worst penalties given so that wasn't scandalous, just debatable like the red card.

That's a fair concern, but really how can I not like a team like Australia? I see them and Ghana as two teams who played very hard and I hoped they went far.... just not at the expense of Italy

that pk was questionable but props to GooseC for being able to defend the Italians with an intelligent argument. I wanted the Aussies to go far, but every point GooseC has brought up has been right on the money. Guess it just wasn't the Socceroo's game.

Why did Switzerland have to choke? Now I'm just going to hope that Italy kills the Ukraine. I really didn't want it to come to that. And did anyone else think that there should have been a penalty kick for Switzerland? I forget which period it was in, but its not like they would have made it anyway.

Against japan - the ref apologized for his error. Against Brazil the foul count was 25 to 9 & the ref ended the game early over a minute from fulltime. Against Croatia the ref gave 3 yellow cards to a croatian player. And against italy we got a bullshit penalty. And refering to wogs as wogs isnt racist expecially when your living in a city where greek, italians etc... refer to themselves as wogs

That was the first referee (SUI vs UKR) that didn't believe the rediculous dives. About time we saw a quality ref! I loved how the announcers would get upity when someone hit the ground, and it would be clear on the replay that it was a dive.
Though really, it's not suprising that a Mexican ref. knows a dive when he sees one!
Oh yea, and Ukraine's second shot in the shootout was sweet.

I'm all for Italy, well cause I'm Italian, and I have to say we got so fricken lucky, but that was the first game Totti's played in the cup, and actually missed that last world cup as well. Thank God he's back.

i love how everybody is critiquing the refs, without appreciating/realizing how hard their job really is. every single ref participating in the WC is extremely qualified, bad calls or not. yes im a soccer ref, and find it annoying when spectators think they know more about officiating than the refs. they call what they see, and do not have instant replay, from several different angles. im not defending their bad calls, b/c yes some of them were bad, just try to understand how difficult it is. lesson to be learned is that bad calls are made almost every game, but the officiating is still fair to both teams, thats what counts. everyone in this thread are only spectators.
ronaldo is a fat ass, but Brazil will still win.

I can agree with that!
However it was typical that italy played bad and were at the end lucky again as always.
Now they will play against Ukraine, which is to my opinion the easiest team to beat from the remaining ones.
I do not expect a great game, but probably Italy will go into the semifinals with luck againn

Yes, but this World Cup has had the worst officiating I have ever seen. I can say that because that's how I feel. It doesn't matter if the ref knows more than me, they amde too many mistakes and blew a lot of games.
