Rename "The Indy Five" - LINE is gone to conglomerate world

Now that LINE is gone, "The Indy Five" will have to get a new name! Armada, Liberty, 4FRNT and Ninthward will have to draft a new company to be in the Indy 5! Who will it be?
Give your call as to who the new fifth company should be. I'd be interested in the responses for my shop. We Used to carry all of "The Indy Five," but we may drop LINE now if they are owned by a mega-conglomerate. You will see them for sale at Sports Authority soon...
What is your pick for the new fifth company in the Indy 5?

LINE is in the exact same situation it was before, just it is owned by K2 instead of Trak Sports. Its no different.

more than that, they're technically owned or incorporated w/ Atomic arent they? that sort of makes them owned by AMER sports am i wrong?...that makes Armada a conglomorate if i'm not mistaken

yeah they are made by Atomic.....but many companies skis are manufactured but other company's factories.....been going on for years. That does not mean theyt are owned by them.
But yes.....Oakley is VERY, VERY, VERY close to Armada. ( T Hall, Ant B, JP).

since you can't quote the creator.. you do realize that Line was already being sold at REI before this, right? thats a comparable store to gart sports, just a little bit higher end, but still a chain.

its a stretch but it could be called a conglomorate of sorts. they make skis, snowboards, bikes, and skates, and while they are all sporting goods, they are diverse in that respect, and thats what a conglomerate is, a company that diversifies into various enterprise.

your a tool, there skis are made in the same factory. That doesnt mean they own them. Tons of smaller companys use the larger companys factorys, its cheeper

why does it matter who the indie 5 or whatever are, maybe this is good for LINE, just like how BMW bought VW, volkswagon cars were good before, but now they are even better

THINK ABOUT IT LOGICALLY! WHY WOULD K2 BUY LINE IF IT DIDNT WANT TO MAKE LINE SKIS!???!?

there is way too much misinformation going on in this thread about who owns who for me to even try and correct. but to the creator, not carrying line in your shop because they are now owned by a larger company, all i have to ask is why? do you honestly feel that being owned by k2 is going to change how line is run, how they sponsor atheletes and contribute to the sport for the worse? obviously this is my own opinion, but i dont see line going downhill or straying from its roots all too much here. what has volkl changed since being bought by k2? made better skis? shared a little bit of technology binding-wise with k2 for their IBC and IBX systems? damn, i guess you wouldnt want to carry a brand who is already one of the most innovative out there who is now essentially being bankrolled by one of the biggest players in the game.

Imagine!!! If Line is anything like BMW, then maybe, since BMW used to make Jet Engines, maybe Line will specialize in Kitchen Appliances...

dont diss on REI it is so much more highend then Gart Sports, I would say the 80% of the people in the ski department (at least at the main REI) know more then any one who has ever set foot in jibij. Also do you know what REI really is. It is a club and I bet less then half of the half that knows what it is actualy belong to it. It was origonaly made to get a bunch of mountainers equipment for cheap. I dont know about you but I do like getting 10% of everything I spend back.

It's a LONG stretch. A diversified company is quite a ways away from a conglomerate.
K2 stays in outdoor sporting goods, which is really only one field. A real conglomerate is, for example, General Electric. GE is involved in commercial finance, healthcare, infrastructure, broadcasting(NBC), various industrial endeavors, and a host of other very diversified businesses.
Corporation may be a semi-accurate term, but I have a hard time calling K2 anything but a company. And a small one at that.

^^ actually we do make money on the indie skis for a simple reason: margin. The big guys like K2 and Salomon give us very little margin to play with, so any discounting comes out of our bottom line.
The indies temd to give us much more margin (remember, we need a profit to stay in business - noting wrong with that). Liberty, Ninthward, and to a lesser degree, Armada and 4FRNT, give us the margin that we need to be able to sell skis competitively.
Every shop has some skis left toward the back of the year. What is great about indies is that we can still be profitable if we mark them down a little. Also, the indies tend to be less costly and so we can stock more varieties.
Finally, some indies like Liberty and Ninthward, won't sell to our big-box competition, which makes our shops (we only have 2) a destination for freeriders.
Ok, I know you didn't want such a L-O-N-G answer, but it is cool to know how the business works I think. So yes, we do make money on the Indie 5.
We will look into carrying Surface along-side Liberty, Ninth, 4FRNT, and Armada, as a result of this thread. We do not carry Surface now.
Thanks for the feedback - actually very helpful.

This shit is dumb.
Armada are and has been made in the same factory as Elan and Atomic...its a manufacturing factory. Atomic or Elan don't OWN them, they just share a manfacturing plant. Shit.
And I'm not making any comments about Oakley and Armada...just do some homework and come back after that.

LINE should still be in the indie 5. its just K2 instead of Trak Sports taking a cut.
All times are Eastern (-5)
