What ski company is core to you and why, this was deleted once because somebody dident like it haveing to do with 9th ward, why does newschoolers do this
any ski company that focuses on one aspect of a sport, such as liberty skis or armada. Though armada is less of a core company because of its ginormity.
igneous, capital, pmgear, dp, kingswood, and a few other custom companies out there.
nothing even needs to be said about them.
I think a few other companies are core as well, armada, ninthward, 4frnt, etc, but I just don't think they are as core as the small custom companies where each ski is made by hand (adam @ igneous, for example, spends about 20 hours per ski - that's core). But when you get into the argument of who is more core than each other everything goes to shit, which I am sure it will do soon enough in this thread.
to me core is a bullshit marketing buzzword. i respect companies that make a quality product, are in touch with the community, and give back significantly to the sport. by no means does a company have to be small to do those things.
A company that dedicates itself to our niche of the skiing world, not because they want to target new demographics or bullshit like that, but because they believe newschool skiing gives life to so many individuals and so many ideas and they want to be apart of something so freaking rad, and help facilitate the riders that breath skiing.
so like, CREAM. I can't say I know enough about any other companies to say that that's truly their motivation for getting involved, but 9th seems to give off that impression, from what I've observed.
core, means basically anything supporting out industry to me. making twin tips is supporting the industry. ninthward and 4frnt and such may be more underground, but i hate all this core bullshit
who the fuck cares. if they make ill skis that ski well then that works for me. I feel a little better supporting a core park company but meh who cares if they make skis that are good for me Ill like um.
I think any company that is out there marketing their skis not for the money but for the sport alone is core. The progression of the sport is what should matter to a core company
it all depends, onviously companies try to be core, but how many of them actually are?
maybe only a couple, but waht do you mean by core, core as in they are in touch with whats going on with the little kiddies, or they are good with their riders, it all depends, but its hard to be core now-a-days.
I dont knwo if they are any true completly core companies left, but they're are definatley some, but im not going to name them cause then people arfe going to say " No, they arent core" or " This ski company is more core then the one you said" so ill let myself decide what company is core and i will keep it to myself
yep.
9thward/line/armada/4frnt, and all the other aren't nearly as "core" as any handmade ski company. If you have a factory you don't do it for the sport, it all becomes for profit. It becomes mass marketing of skis.
not at all. sure they do need to make a profit, but its not like that is all they are doing is only producing skis. they actually do love the sport which is why they are making skis in the first place.
yes they need to make money, of course. It's just they are getting more into the public world than the smaller companies who handmake the skis and put as much effort into them as they can.
wait wtf am I saying?
haha I didn't mean that at all. I'm totally spaced out now.
Core to me is basically the smallest company. If they are made by skiers and run by skiers, then handmade skis are more "core" than a factory made ski because the individual skier makes sure that he/she has a great product to sell.
Basically smaller, no factory = more core than factory.
I'm tired, so I'm logging of NS. last post of the day.
Just because someone has the resources to manufacture the skis more efficiently doesn't mean that they've lost any passion for the sport. it just means that they're able to spread their passion and innovation to more people. don't tell me that getting a ski press is selling out! that's just stupid.
i agree with you in a sense. core is extremely overused in the skiing world. theres so many diffrent types of core. core skiers are the ones who essentially are so in love with it they dedicate their lives to it.
core ski companies though i dunno. off the top of my head, the list goes like iggys. igneous, capital, kingswood, DB(pretty sure they went out of busniess). these guys are so full of skiing stoke that they decide to take it one step farther and make their own skis. they make em for the right reasons too. they need a performing basic ski that will hold strong and sturdy when they need it.
but then you have the argument of everyone starting out small. im sure K2 was a small company at first, and were considered a core company, and in a sense, they are, they build skis because people want to ski, and K2 wants to provide quality things.
Line and 4frnt were very small companies to begin with, and theyve grown enormously over the past several years. now lots of people would not consider line a core company based only on their succes and popularity.
its a fine line for me. it seems like people define core as un-noticed, but so when the company becomes noticed, they suddenly become un-core? dosnt make sense, a core company should stay a core company, as long as they were founded on the right reasons, not because it was "the cool, hip thing to do"
core should have nothing to do with ski companys and ever thing to do with those who ride skis, period. A rich 13 year old kid who gets his dad to buy him all new skis ans outer wear....core? i dont think so. But a person who has a job or two while going to school to be able to get some new ski gear every once in a while because their parents either cant, wont or they dont want them to pay all the way. A guy who still manages to get out to ski a 4 days a week at least.....now that is core skiing
I say fuck it, the word "core" and "ski" should be made illegal to use in the same sentence, paragraph, ANYTHING! Fuck the word "core" its soo worthless and its so played, and will continue to be played.
what do you mean no? What he just said was absolutely, objectively true. If your comany is producing more skis, more people get their hands on them, which makes them a more public company - thus making them not as 'core' (stupid word, I agree with Heath.) as a company making half as many skis. ('Core' at least by the standard definition of it on this site...)
^core doesn't mean making less skis. it means devoting all your company's efforts to making skis solely for our niche of the sport. it doesn't matter whether you make 3 pairs of skis a year or 3000. if you're making only twintips, you're core.
I don't understand the distinction still. How are Salomon, K2, Rossignol, (insert big name brand here), not core?
From what I understand, these companies give plenty back to the skiing community, by offering the most sponsorships, hosting the most events, getting skiing the most publicity, getting the most people involved in our beautiful sport.
Salomon may be making some money but that doesn't mean that the guys don't love skiing. Salomon is not like a huge conglomerate or anything. It's a relatively small company that started making outerwear and then skis, and now has expanded SLIGHTLY. They have 2800 employees. Worldwide. That is fucking NOTHING.
So maybe they have 5, 6, 10 times as many people as other companies? They were there since the beginning, when skiing wasn't about making money, and now if they make a few bucks, I say more power to them. It's bullshit to say they aren't core. Where were all the current "core" companies when JF Cusson was winning the Big Air at the X Games in '99?
It is definitely bullshit to say that Salomon, K2, and Rossi aren't "core" because they make some money. More money = more sponsorships = more given back the skiing community. They are core as hell to me.
Core has NOTHING to do with a ski company it has EVERYTHING to do with the consumer.
The typical rich kid newschooler who parents buy him his overpriced Armadas is not Core.
Being "core" has nothing to do with equipment - it has everything to do with attitude, dedication and sacrifice for the sport you love.
Weekend warriors who jump on trends are not core...people who bite off others style are not core...people who get all up on T-halls jock are not core - Your just FANS and Fad-driven hypocrits who try to act cooler than you are....step outside and look at your little "core" scene and you will see nothing but marketing, branding and suckers who bought into it....
i never syaed that there arnt "core" companys that started from little or nothing. I sayed that the word core should have nothing to do with the company and every thing to do with the every day joe who rides them. The guys who chances are wont get sponsered or go to the xgames, but they still go out there trying to progress ever week.
What i was saying is the word should be moved away from the companys and to the skiers, because they are who define our sport
i also replied seriously to it because there are far to many 12 and 13 year olds who come on here and their mountians and throw not just the word but the very nature of our sport around. They need to be told straight.
ok... but honestly, "core" has risen to about the same level as "x-treme"... like, the word itself has been abused way too much to actually be taken seriously... and i'm pretty sure most of the 12 to 13 year old kids you suggest are ignorant to this world, likely won't read any of these posts let alone take them seriously...
ok, your right there. At this point it is more likely than not just another meaningless word, and the people that are ignorant probably wont read this, but theres still no hurt in putting it out there
core to me is anyone who loves the sport and trys to make it better, for everyone, i dont think it should matter what your graphics look like or your rep just as long as your true to skiing down to your CORE then you have the right to call yourself CORE
haha
so true I suggest this thread get deleted
there are so many of these threads.
I'm not going to recomment the search bar, just look one or two pages back.
my haggard ass coimpany is pretty core its just me making haggard ass twins in my garage, it fun you can design and build whatever you wwant to your prefs
to me, core is when a bunch of guys act like assholes and throw their beer cans on the course, and then rate other teams runs a 1 after they threw down, and then writing FUCK everywhere
