It's a coffin-type thing that is filled with salt water that is body temperature. It is meant to block out all sound and light. People use it to kind of mediate, or release themselves. Most can only tolerate it for about a 1/2 hour because your brain will start to "see lights" and "hear sounds" because it's not used to the complete dark/silence.

1. that creature is called a Tauntaun.
2. Luke didn't cut it open, Han did using Luke's lightsaber.

Also OP I got this off teh intrawebz.

it's a sensory deprivation chamber. since DD's senses were all so heightened he needed it to sleep so he wouldn't hear everything that's going on in the world outside. the chamber deprives your senses so you don't see, hear, feel anything while you're in it.
