i go to UC davis now but i went to high school like a mile away from SCU. the beach is 30-45 minutes from you, and santa cruz has some dope spots for surfing fo sho. skiing is a bitch from the bay though. you need to seriously schedule your classes so that you don't have school on friday or something, because if you try to leave saturday morning to ski you will spend two hours just getting out of the bay area unless you leave at four in the morning. tahoe resorts are 4 hrs drive with no traffic, anywhere from 5-9 hours on major holidays. there's always the dodge ridge/bear valley option. those are a little closer, like 3-3.5 hours, but the skiing simply isn't as good as tahoe, at all.
if you really like skiing, transfer quick.

what about by air? i think san jose is a major hub for some airline, maybe southwest, and im pretty sure they have a million flights a day from san jose to reno/tahoe, so the tickets are relatively cheap.. has anyone tried this option? how far is skiing from that airport.... or other airports too around mammoth and june?

blahh its a long story, santa clara hooked up fat scholarship $ so my dad said i can use the money i saved towards skiing. if its like 80 bucks round trip to reno/tahoe and back, im going to have enough motivation to get my ass on the mountain. especially if its a dope mountain so thats why im curious

No way San Jo to Reno is an eight hour flight; San Diego to Oakland is an hour and a half, tops.
It's not going to be that cheap, especially if you do it a lot. I'd go with Bret's idea -- get fridays, and if you can mondays , off and shred those days. That way you'll miss the shittacular traffic out of the bay, too.

he's talking about paying for 8 hours worth of gas while driving... pretty pricey now that it's 3 bucks a gallon.
and as far as the airport goes, you'd be in a bit of the same pickle timewise at least. you have to check in like 45 minutes before your flight, then you've got about an hour in the plane between flight time, boarding, and taxiing, then you have to wait for your skis at baggage claim, then rent a car or make some friends and drive another 45 minutes from reno to tahoe. i dunno, it sounds pretty techy. i'd stick to driving, cuz even though it takes awhile the mountains still definitely make it worth it. good luck man, and i'll look forward to seeing you on the hill.
