Replying to Ohakune, NZ Skiing

I just got placed in New Zealand for an exchange program. I'm gunna be there from July to January, and I want advice on where to ski. The town i'm going to is in the middle of the North Island, just south of Mt. Ruapehu, in Ohakune. I leave in jult, and am wondering whether it would be worth the like 100 at least dollars of shipping to get my skiis there. Maybe there are some good summer-mountains or something. I think there a few resorts like 15-40 kms away from Ohakune, but I don't know if there are some that are any better.
