I just got placed in New Zealand for an exchange program. I'm gunna be there from July to January, and I want advice on where to ski. The town i'm going to is in the middle of the North Island, just south of Mt. Ruapehu, in Ohakune. I leave in jult, and am wondering whether it would be worth the like 100 at least dollars of shipping to get my skiis there. Maybe there are some good summer-mountains or something. I think there a few resorts like 15-40 kms away from Ohakune, but I don't know if there are some that are any better.
my nana lives in ohakune and it is a sik town... ruhapehu is like the only mountain reli close but but thats got 2 resorts on the 1 mountain but same lift ticket... its worth the ski shipment... the mountain has awsome terrain and nice parks too
DUde, its totally worth it.....You have to remember you will be arriving in the dead of winter. July to September is prime time for skiing just a couple of mins away from you. Plus, in your time off, going down to the south island will blow your mind. Do, it, whatever it costs.
Ohakunes the Best ski town in the north island NZ.
trust me im gonna be there 4 the entire ski season,
theres 2 ski fields close (Whakapapa and Turoa...) fukd up name aye?
mountain opens on june 16th, and its already been dumping down pre season,
got any queations, fire them in this forum.
c/u
also, how crazy would it be to try to backpack the south island in August? would lower elevation trekking be doable or would there be a shit ton of snow to posthole through?
nah it only snows on the mountains during winter,
you get the occasional storm in the citys, but most of the time its only way up on top.
as for the skiing down there....
im from the north island ski fields, so il try to give you my most honest answer, ( bit a rivalry )
um there okay... they get beta snow (lighter and Dryer) but we have got defently better terrain up north, if i was heading to NZ id spent winter ( july august ) down south island and then move up north island for the spring ( septmeber, october, november)
