i think the REALLY big names in the ski business like Candide, Jon, Tanner, Pep, all get by easily. But alot of the smaller pros are just like anybody else.
Most of the bigger pro get more than average salary..couple hundred g's..enough to live comfortably and break a couple pairs a week. everyone else probably makes enough to get by.
yea this isnt like hockey, there are no super rich pro's unless they have a buisness on the side or something like that, im shure some of the top guys get by allright, but not rich
uhhhhh, rich, nnnnnooooo.. but at least you get to travel and film, and do stuff like that, If i had the chance, I would rather do that than sit behind a desk and make a bunch of money but be miserable. Even if that ment just getting by. haha I guess that would be the same as now only id be traveling.LOL I dont know, ask andy
ya, claton is right. some may make a bit more than average, but most probably make less. They do get a lot of stuff free from sponsers and stuff though.
he might make that much cuz of armada but he doesnt make that much on top of wat he makes co-owning armada. who would pay him that much?and there was some forum saying jon olsen was a milionaire? well he sure as hell didnt make millions from just skiing
well consider this, when tanner hall wins the x-games he gets a 50,000 dollar check for that, plus his sponsors will most likely match his contest winning to some extent, especially his big sponsors: red bull, oakley (two huge multinational corporations), armada, dalbello etc.. so from one contest were talking at least 150 000. but guys who spend most of thier time filming and are sponsored by sick companies but not necessarily huge companies, like andy, probly arent making anywhere near the same realm of cash. so like any sport theres probly a huge range of pay to be had, but at the very least they make enough to get by skiing for a job. which is worth more than money.
It depends. some of the younger ones, who place well in comps are making some good money. I'm pretty sure that sponsors match what you make in comps.... some at least. so if someone makes 10 grand in a comp, their sponsor will hook it up with 10 more. But i'd say only a handful of pros are really well off with just skiing.
In Europe Candide is known for been the richer french skier ever. He makes more money than race skiers and there's a lot multinational companies who sponsor raceskiing! He has got a few mio..
But he's an exeption like Tanner, Simon and Jon are. They have big companies behind them. And not only companies from the skiing industry. But theses guys are soo famous! Other pro skiers can live from skiing. From just enough to live to pretty good but they're not rich at all.
I'm pretty sure that Armada makes goood business too. How many of you guys have Armadas?
they prolly dont make a lot of money but they are living every1 one this sites dream..skiing for a living..traveling around the world with other skiers all the time..what else do they need money for?
That's right. But a freestyle skiing career ends when you're around 30. no? And then? Some have the possibility of working for the brand they've promoted. But there isn't a place for all of them. Nowadays lots of young pros skiers are pros just after highschool. Life isn't 30years but more something like 70.
^its true that they may end their career at around 30, but they still have plenty of other opportunities ahead of them and if they cant sill work in the ski industry and all else fails they could go back to school or something
ok fair enough prize money for comps, but what about the athletes that are the heart and soul of their film companies but don't compete. e.g. sage or pollard- how much do their sponsors and film companies pay them? do athletes even get paid for films?
if i were rich i'd just spend most of my $ on skiing anyway(or a good prtion of it)
you get paid to go skiing! how sick is that? answer:unbelievably sick.
nah man......there is NO money in pro skiing. You can bearly make ends meat man. The real money is owning companys.....or having a job in companys. (i.e team managers, ski designers, editors, starting your own company.....etc) The only reason Tanner makes a good amount of money is beacause he owns a chunk of Armada.
well marc frank makes at least 300 grand just from his sponsors, and even more from his hotels, but he snowboards, and is probably the biggest name in snowboarding besides shawn
such a perfect thread. NO, they don't make good money. Period. It is a great lifestyle, but i can name off 10 'big time pros' right now that make about 25 grand a year. A.K.A. Poverty line. This excludes simon, tanner, jon, chris davenport, seth, and candide. They do make a decent living. The pay is a joke. Winning competitions is a serious bonus though, if a pro has a good comp year they can rake in the dough.
sponsors pay for the rider's comp fees and expenses and trips. they pay for the food and tickets and hotels when they go to film.....what money does a skier really need? expenses taken care of, there isnt much down time from the sport
