i always thought if there was a difference, it would be that hip hop is more upbeat and uhh...yeah kinda hard to explain, im probably wrong though. i thought a song like cormega-the machine(rap) would be a different genre then kanye-golddigger...i dont know, ive wondered the same thing every now and then too.

couldn't have said it better. and personally, i hate rap, but love hip hop.
i guess you could say that rap is about the image and lifestyle where hip hop is more about a love for the music. hip hop is alot smoother and easier to listen to

hip hop involves 4 subtopics so to speak. emceeing, djing, graffiti, and breakdancin. it is alot deeper, has more meanin. rap is just the emceeing part that has nothing to do with the other 3 parts of hip hop

i think of it as, Rap is hip-hop, but hip hop is not necessarily rap. Its more of an umbrella term. Its also used more to refer to underground music, rather than shitty commmercial crap.

Hip Hop is positive lyrics, and putting emphasis on how they still enjoy their music and the process it took them to get there. They also sing about how they are not effected by the media, "Bling-bling", cars, and other useless stuff. Rap is a type of music in which they sing about money, clothes, cars, hoes, handguns, and basically every negative thing you could think of.

Hip hop is a lifestyle, rap is a type of music that falls under that lifestyle. Its not as simple as "rap is mainstream shit and hip hop is good". It goes both ways.
