Kids are too worried about getting sponsered

here is my little rant about sponsorship. basically i think that it is way overrated. if you really work hard and get a real hookup than that is definatelly sick and you chould get some credit for that, but all these kids now are devoting their career to getting sponsored. i guess if it helps ur self-esteem than whatever, but the fact is that most of ur parents will buy you whatever you want at the beginning of the season. and if you have any talent than you will get hooked up by people even if you aren't sponsoered. but ur gonna ski the same anyways so who cares if you are sponsored. thoughts?

If you need a sponsor to get hot bitches I feel sorry for you. I know ugly guys that can get girls cause they have enough self confidence to chat them up.

agreed... plain and simple, it gets annoying riding with people who have these "agendas" (filming comps etc.) to complete by the end of the season so they can become sponsored and all they're talk about skiing (before, during and after the season) has some sort of link about themselves seeking sponorship or becoming sponsored... kinda kills my stoke... guess that wasn't so plain and simple...

wait are you trying to tell me skiing isnt about getting sponsered and making it pro but having fun, thats crazy talk!

it all depends on the kid, some kids need that sponser to keep them in skiing, which i think is dumb and they should just stop, most of these young kids think too much about getting sponsered thet they usually not end up getting sponsered because it doesnt look like they are having fun when they ride, i personnaly know i wont get sponsered and i am fine with that, but i still ski cause its fun, you know?

Well heres my thoughts, Im sponsored, I ride for SMith, Giro, Sequence gloves, Hi ball energy drink, and Ive been getting some stuff cheap from Line and H/H. I am not trying to brag or anything, but being sponsored is good because Ive broken 3 pairs of skis this year. It would be hard for me without LINE because I dont have parents that are like, here, have some more skis. I def agree with there are too many kids worried about it, Ive had some kids ask me how to get sponsored and they say theyre workin getting there 3s and 180s solid with a grab. PPPPSSSHHHH. Just go ski, if you want to send out apromo, whatever, if your good youll get hooked up. But in the over all scope of things, I ski because I fucking love it, one of my most fun days this year was after being hurt and not being able to ski, being at Alpine gettos in the pouring down rain. Whatever, Im going skiing regardless of sponsors

just because you're sponsored doesn't mean you don't love skiing and ski for the fun of it. very few sponsored kids ski solely for the sponsorship. A lot of young skiers go through a "want to get sponsored" phase for a year or two. Most eventually realize that sponsorship isn't really what they want or need and they stop caring. Personally, I'm not someone whose parents have bought me all new equipment every year, so I like that aspect of sponsorship.
don't worry too much about it. Most people either stop caring about getting sponsored, or they work hard enough to land a sponsor. Almost everybody ends up happy in the end. Because when it comes down to it, skiing is fun.

some kids need sponsors because the sport of skiing is very expensive. this may be hard for some rich ass holes to understand but not all people can afford new skies every year because they get destroyed by rails. if people can get helped out with equiptment they have more money for going to competions. skiing should be fun, you should ski for that reason not for sponsorship. but the act of sponsorship in its self is indeed important and it does take some work.

sponsorships would be sick, but skiing is about having fun and not always trying to beat out the other guy, have fun first and compete second

we cant turn against sponsership. Its so great, gibing the best kids great stuff for free so they can ski whats wrong with that. I mean like if companys are happy to do it then its cool. Whats wrong with kids pushing their limits to get a sponsership to me that seems like a good thing.
^ by the way sounds like someone cant get sponsered

I think this is a pretty good topic to discuss. I don't think it's too much of a common problem, but clearly, it's a growing issue. 50% of the people I ride with are sponsored on one level or another, and they're all decent people, who stumbled across sponsorship or more or less competed a lot to seek out sponsorship to help them be able to afford to dedicate their lives to the sport they love. with that said there are a lot of people who think that sponsorship is the final frontier of skiing. and that it's the main goal, to get a sponsor. and be a cool sponsored skier with credibility and people constantly giving them props and praising their talent. If you are mature enough to not give a damn about the latter stuff, and just want to ski as much as you can. it's totally possible without beiing sponsored or hooked up. I skied 114 days this season, I have a steady job, and I'm getting a college education. I did one competition this season, simply because I wanted to ski park and it was going to be closed to everyone who wasn't in the comp. It's a huge risk to dedicate yourself to skiing. It's not really as glamorous as I think some people see it as.

you need to read this all again...they're not bashing on getting sponsored, but saying how lame it is how most of us at one point have made a thread asking how to get sponsored, or spending a whole season focusing on only getting sponsored instead of focusing on having fun

they're talking about kids that come on here and there first post is...how do i get sponsored?

i don't see why it matters though. Just because someone thinks they're good enough to get some hook ups why does everyone have to get all bitter and turn against them? It's all up to the individual companys, they're the ones who decide. It's not like someone just leaning a 3 is gona get top level sponsership with travel budget and what not because they're asking about it on newschoolers. Just let them dream.

i agree with what you're trying to say. but in the real world not all parents just give their kids whatever they want at the beginning of the season. especially when you dont live at home anymore... so being sponsored is definitely something that would be REALLY nice but i agree that some kids worry way too much.
ride to have fun thats what its all about

It would be cool to get hooked up with free skis, because you would have a sick quiver for free or cheap, but if people were always telling me how to ski and what to do I would get burnt out like I did with racing and I would probobly start snowboarding or something just to keep it real. Kids just want to be like their heros, and when they ski their heros are pro skiers and whatnot, the idea pushes kids to try harder, but sometimes it can take away from it. Idealy I would like to be flowed stuff from k2, but its probobly not going to happen as I am a fulltime college student and dont get to ski enough.

I really think sponsership is great...BUT i think that skiing for us, who truthfully have no chance in hell in getting a sponsor, should just go to the mtn with all their friends and have a good time...I think if you do something way to much and you feel pressured into doing something you are more apt to get burnt out. But by just having fun you are excited every time you are in the car and pull up to the mtn Hoping for all HELL that there will be some sick new feature at your home park that may be small but fun, so you can just try it and screw around. To me skiing should be a sport where you can fuck around and not have to worry about getting made fun of because you suck, everyone should be happy for what they can do and hope to progress every time, sponsosred or not

to the kid who said there's not wrong reason for sponsorship: you're wrong. wanting to be sponsored for status is a bad reason.
and as far as free shit goes, getting free stuff is great. but it isn't hard to get a job and buy your own stuff. even if you are in school. i used to buy all sorts of ski stuff when i was in high school. save your lunch money, sell weed, get a job.

NO no no, you guys got it all wrong, skiings not about having fun, its about dedicating it to getting sponsored and becoming pro, sspend all you season making the SICKEST vid to then get sponsoreed, dont ski with friends cause they can sidetrack you from that stuff. when your pro you get all the hoeeezzz bitchhezz

Sponsoring is nice if you don't your $$$ from parents.
Get a job. Then you can buy your skis and feel good about it.
It is definitely overrated because 99% of all sponsored kids are going nowhere in life if they focus on it too much.
Get a job and get good grades thats how ur successful

i agree that there is nothing wrong with sponsorship and i had no intention of saying that in my post. my point is that kids make it their only goal to get sponsored. i ride with a ton of kids who are sponsored and are my age. we are all at the same ability level and have fun riding together. there are no grudges or anything. we just have fun

School as in college, as in living by myself w/out a job. I get money from my parents, but its like rent, tuition and money for food. Its a little different when you have financial responsibility as well as priorities. and to selling weed: If I was going to make money I would sell blow, there is no money in selling weed.
Maybe when your older you'll understand that money isnt free and it doesnt last.

Who cares if you are sponsored? Get a job and pay for your own skis. If you fuck them up on rails, stop doing rails...learn to ski bumps or trees or something.

heres an idea, go work for the ski company. be a product rep. my buddy did it for a few years, and they gave him skis, gear and a van to live in, as long as he sold their stuff. also, if you want to get sponsered, dont try so hard by sending in video and stuff. just go ski all the time, and if your good, you'll get noticed.

dude you obviously didn't read my post and you're being a little bitch. I said when I was in high school I worked, saved my money, and bought my own ski equipment.
These days I get NO money from my parents, I pay my own tuition, and I have an apartment to pay for. I buy all my own food, pay for my cell phone, pay for my medical bills, my car payment.... and I skied 114 days this season, i have over 10 pairs of skis, all of which i have purchased for myself i have passes to 6 of the local mountains, 4 of which i payed for myself, the other two mountains i get free passes to. GET A JOB. I am a fulltime student and during the semester I was still able to work more than 40 hours a week. It's not that hard, it's a matter of lack of motivation. life is what you make it. if you want to ski everyday without being sponsored and still maintaining your financial responsbilities, you can. i do it everyday.
