Things you wish you knew before leaving

So I'm leaving for Mammoth tomorrow and this is my first long distance ski trip. Now I know a lot of you have driven or flown all over the world to ski and have made the same mistakes that I'm sure to make tomorrow. So to get to the point...

What are some things that you wish you knew before flying somewhere to ski? Forget anything important or just come unprepared in general? I'm trying to minimize the number of dumb mistakes I make.

thanks. i was looking for something a little more meaningful than that. is there an extra charge for checking skis at baggage?

no not for most airlines but u might wanna check prior to getting there and tell them to put one of those fragile tags on ure ski bag or else they will prob get wrecked

how are you getting to mammoth?, theres a 23dollar shuttle from reno airport which can't be beat unless your splitting gas like 3 ways

one thing i wished i did more when I went to Vail for my season ending trip was go all out. Its close to the end man, If I were you, I would take full advantage and push yourself as hard as you can to get better

word. put all your real important stuff in your carry on. ipod, camera, extra underwear, candy, phone, etc. and carry your boots on your packpack because it sucks having to rent boots if your luggage gets lost. have fun!

yeah, we're taking that. only 23 bucks though? i assumed itd be more expensive than that. do you know how often it runs?

A lot of airlines don't include your ski bag as part of your main baggage allowance, so pack clothes and boots in there too if they'll fit. Best to check with your airline though.

Don't take too much stuff with you, especially clothes and if you know you're going to have laundry at your house. I came to Whistler 8 months ago with 30kg of baggage (my limit was 20kg) but I've bought an entire ski setup + clothes plus other stuff so I've got way too much stuff to take home. I'm sure there are a lot of clothes I brought that I only wore a few times or not at all. Just take the essentials. And remember, no matter how big your bag is, you will ALWAYS manage to fill it.

wrap a sweater or something around your bindings in your ski bag, use your boot bag as a carryon, and have fun! anything else you forget you can just buy when you get there.

yea, i put my helmet in my ski bag and it got ran over. my skis didnt get hurt bad but my helmet is now flat.

take next to no clothes except the ones you're wearing and bring sweat shirts. shoes and ski stuff are all you nead after that. its a ski trip, all you need are your skis

check with the airline about skis, many of them have certain ways they want you to pack them etc... plus it may cost more. if youre there for a while, dont ski real hard in the begining of the week, youll regret it later on when you know the mountain better and want to really rip unless youre used to skiing many consecutive days.

CARRY YOUR BOOTS ON!!! I've always used my boots for carry on. just velcro them together, toss them over your shoulder, or through the loops on your backpack, and go. IT's easy to rent skis, but not having your boots, that you know fit right sucks. so, if they loose your luggage, you'll be alright.
normally, my carry on has everything i need to ski, minus skis. (pant, gogs, gloves, socks, and ski boots) and i normally wear a hoodie or jacket on the plane.

1 word - ADVIL!!!! and socks i always bring way to many but its good if they get wet. remember to take your boots apart every night!!
