So my friend gave me his iPod so I could erase all the stuff on it (like make it back to they way it comes out of the box) then put some songs on it, problem is I have no idea how to erase it or transfer music to it, do you have to use iTunes or can you drag and drop or what?

i don't have an ipod, but i guess in the setup there should be something along the lines of "restore factory settings"

there's something called "purge ipod". what's purge you ask? think of a model chick who "purges" her stomach after she eats a rice cake, thus emptying it. "purge" your ipod.

it's under edit or controls or something in your itunes. just poke around and you'll find it, it's been a while since i've used that feature, so pardon my uncertainty.

if you just plug it into a computer with a different itunes library, it should erase all current memory and update only the songs from the computer it is currently connected to. at least that used to be possible, my friend did it by accident. they may have changed that to prevent accidnetal erasure, but im not sure.
