For some reason whatever i find isn't the right car, and a couple people sound pretty knowledgeable. It needs to be somewhere around $10000, give you take a 1000. Looking nice, economical, and practical are all good things. Not really looking for a two seater. Throw out some idea's, and I'll look into them.

well, are you looking for a fast car?
arent you the one who had the sti deal?
if thats the case, then you obviously want a fast car, so..
look into the 95-99 eclipses, GST and GSX models. there arent many GSX models available, but you can find both for a little over $10,000.
also audi a4 (1.8 or 2.8).. anywhere from '97-'00 0 both great cars and quick, but maintenance is expensive if you need new parts
others: nissan SE-R or SE-R spec-v, prelude SI or SH ( '97 and up models become drastically higher priced), 3000gt ( not the best gas mileage but a classic, quick car ), RSX ( and possibly a type S for around 12,000)
and the list goes on...

i love how everyone at my school thinks they are getting like mustangs and corvettes and shit. "oh man you gotta have a muscle car" and then dont know shit about cars so then they find out they cant get one for insurace or price or some other gay reason and then get a ricer like every other normal teen.
anyway...haha get a prelude, tint it out, rims, exhaust and your good man. as long as its got vtec.

you basically described a ricer... unless its '97 and up - and if it is, dont do anything to it, they are nice cars without mods

chances are that suice you dont know what you want, you need to go to aa byunch of dealerships and test drive a shitload of cars, youll end up with something that you will love. look into something with AWD/4X4 if you want a really realiable ride for the winter/bad weather. Im a jeep man so look into jeeps if you dont mind the "bad" gas mileage.

take your time looking around at local dealers and online to get a feel for what you like and what suits your needs/wants best. some cars will grow on you and you might just find one that you become dead set on. 10k is a lot to play with and you can definitly find a real nice used car with fairly low miles on it.
Also since you were the guy who had the STI thread i strongly warn you to watch for scams when looking around online. If the price is too good to be true it probably is a scam. Never deal with someone who refuses to let you see the car in person and test drive it. If they say they or the car is out of the country but will ship it for free once you send them the money, its a scam.
if your looking for a sports car i would definitly recommend looking for a mustang or camaro/firebird with decent mileage, 95-99 eclipse gsx or gst was also a good suggestion, prelude, or integra(you can find a gsr model for 10k). im not a huge fan of the non vr-4 3000gt's only because even though they look great you dont get a whole lot for the high price tag. if you want more of a ski car i would look into a subaru imprezza or wrx(wagon or sedan), a jeep grand cherokee, or toyota 4runner.
just look around, see what you like and get back to us.

also kjeep in mind, some wechiles are higher cost of ownership than others. Audis and VWs can be very expensive to just keep up,let alone fix. Same goes for DSMs, they have almost a calender of events that needs to be done to keep them in good shape.

stay away from audi's and volkswagens they were just rated as worst in quality of all major car manufacturers, subaru was highest, get an outback or something, honda accords are good too just get on with v-tec, preludes are also sick but you won't be able to fit your ski stuff in it

he wont be able to get a new audi or vw obviously, those are the unreliable ones, around 2002 and below are pretty good, they have alot less problems than other cars but when they do they are more expensive to fix. i was deciding between a wrx and an s4 and i drove like 7 of each and the wrx's always had little problems like cupholders and shit breaking all over the place, one vibrated like crazy whenever you accelerated or slowed down, one the tranny was screwed, they all had little shitty problems. and out of all the audi's i drove one of them had a bad cluth and that was it.

No . Subaru (and coming in a close second Mitsubishi) have the most advanced AWD systems on the domestic market. Audi (praised for it's saftey and luxury) have devoluped what you may call a "safe a comfortable" AWD system.
Now, depending on what you taste is (either luxury or sporty...maybe a mix of both) the transmission can be setup vastely differant.
Now to the differance among the transmission:
Subaru has three unique advantages on it's side:
1. DCCD (Driver Controled Center Differential) - This enables the operator to distribute the power from front to rear to where he/she may see fit. This could range from 70% rear 30% front to 40% rear 60% front. This will give you a hand on drag (where power is more useful at the rear) to everyday poor wheather driving eg. ice, snow, sleet (where the power up front will help with traction on less-then-optimal surfaces.
2. Semi-lock and Full-Lock Differentials:
This allows the driver to lock his/her front differential. This helps pull the car out of snow as well as added traction on slippery surfaces. Grip on the front "pulls a car." This means less hassle and squirming on slippery surfaces. Very handy for ice packed snow or black ice.
3. A. Sequential gearbox
B. Front Limited Slip Differential
C. Center Viscious Culping Differential
D. Rear Limited Slip Differential
Before I go any further I understand this is a skiing form and not a car forum. Thus I do not expect everyone reading this post to understand exactly what a "Viscous Cupling Differential" is. So I will give you the cliff notes on how these work.
A Limited slip differential operates off two opposing wheels. For example: the front two tires and the rear two tires. The differential sences loss of traction on one side, pulls power form it, and applies it to the other side.
A viscous cuping differential works in conjunction with the front and rear limited slip differentials. It sences loss of traction on either side, pulls it, and applies it to the other side (front or rear) with more traction. Then it is up to the limited slip differentials to decide which wheel to put a certain percentage or that power to.
Make sence? Hope so.
Now on to Audi:
Audi has none of that.
.....Well, I will give Audi a break, they DO have Limited Slip and Viscous Cupling Differentials but they are nowhere NEAR the performance and engineering that a subaru AWD system has to offer.
Audi has devoluped a AWD system that is more luxury oriented. You don't need to you with it or chance it's settings. It just does it's job and that it.
Bacically, it's better for grocery getting if you don't know shit about cars. Nuff said.
Now let's break it down:
Subaru: Rally bred AWD system optimal for race situations.
Audi: Simple AWD...still very good, but cannot even be compaired to Subaru's AWD system.
Cliff notes: Subaru > Audi

^well said!!!! Another person that knows their cars!!!
You do NOT want locking diffs for the snow/ice, when you LOCK your diffs its alwats a 50/50 split, this makes handeling very pproor. Lokcing diffs, actually the diffs dont lock, you lock shafts via a locker likea ox, arb ect. Limited slipts on the other hand are very nice, usualy its a100/0 or a 75/25 power split between weels, when one sluips it weither displaces power evenly, 50/50 or put the power to the wheel with traction. This make for great road manners because you basiclly have open diffs while driving until one slipps. unlike with lockiong diffs when you will have a whine and bind when driving, especially when turning, this also causes your tires to wear MUCH quicker.
I ahte the VC in my np249 transfer case in my jeep, actually i love it i just hate how its hydrolicly controlled, causeing it to go out about every 75,000-100,000 miles, but o well, time for a np 24/231 swap.
