What the hell is Chads Gap?

I'm talking about the actual mound. Same with pyramid. Why is there a big mound of dirt in the middle of the gulch? Is it natural? Anyone know? It really makes no sense to me. Maybe I'm over analyzing this.

They are piles of mine tailings from back when Alta was a mining town. If you go up there in the summer theres a bunch of busted old mining equipment by them too.

what's wierder than the actual mounds is the fact that no matter how much snow we get, you will always see the rocks and dirt on the southwest facing side of chad's. minerals and crap. even with 15+' base the southwest side remains uncovered.

It's not that strange when you consider the valley channelling and canyon flow that happens in Little Cottonwood, with Grizzly Gulch sitting at the very top. The winds whip through, and the landing of chads essentially becomes a wind vane in the bottom of that flow.

^^^ yeah it could be wind, but i don't think so. you can tell the windblown effects and besides there are other protruding corners and features in the gulch that get buried by snow. there is some kind of heat generated by minerals in the tailings or something like that. that is my vote and i'm sticking to it. but i don't know crap and maybe it is just wind. all I know is that it is strange to see in the middle of winter.

well wind will help by not allowing snow to pile up on the wind blown surfaces and depositing that on the leeward side. also, radiant and direct heating can occur... notice how the north side of canyons melt so much quicker than the south side. the sun, even when under freezing temps, can have a huge effect on snowmelt.

they are mine tailings, but they blew them up this summer b/c everyone was getting hurt on them. so now chad's is gone, but pyramids is still there.

there isn't always dirt on chads. I've seen it mutiple times completly covered. but usually there is dirt becuase the sun melts it out and the wind blows it off the top of the landing. specially when spring time comes. grizz goes from awesome powdery snow to shitty mashed potatoes in about an hour sometimes.
