i dont understand why some many people think warren miller is the shit. i will give him credit for helping make skiing what it is today. But why do some people think his movies are so amazing. TGR, PBP....ect make movies that are just as good if not better. Whats all the hype about.
warren miller IS the shit. his movies may not have tanner smoking a blunt and g-unit , but i really think they show all aspects of skiing in a cool way.
dude i dont know where people were saing hes the shit, cause it prob wasnt on this site, but i do go to the video every year cause he started that kinda thing, and his video's show many disaplins(sp?) of skiing not just massive park and big air, dont get me roung, i also watch and buy pbp movies and msp's movies but the miller stuff is pretty good too
I grew up watching warren miller movies and my dream was to go out west and ski big mountains. I don't think he's the shit but I still like his movies.
i don't think most people on this site would admit that they even like miller. however, he should be respected. he has given alot to the eposure and progression of our sport outside the realm of competion and racing. every skier used to wait for the miller tour to see the new flicks and if you wanted to rent a ski flick, miller is all there was. the man loves the sport as much as anyone and made a career out of it - a career of making something enjoyable for all skiers. he deserves props for that. they have a whole different feel than msp and others, but, miller's got seth riding for him again and plenty of other big names that we all love. infact, seth, the new canadian airforce, and others were all riding in miller films before msp and others. so i respect and enjoy his films. but, that being said... they're no TEDDY BEAR CRISIS-my personal fav of all time.
Warren Miller shows all aspect of skiing. which is awesome for a person who doesnt ski. because for someone who doesnt ski or isnt into skiing as much as we are seing nothing but jumps and rails for 45 minutes gets pretty boring.
for example im not into wakeboarding and if I ever see a wakeboarding video ill be impressed for 2 or 3 jumps and then get boared as hell.
Warren Miller shows freestyle skiing, tele skiing, he shows people going to Africa to ski snow thats hundreds or even thousands of years old, he shows Alaskan steeps he shows skiing from the 70s and 80s. and he does a very good job of showing what skiing means to different people.
everyone in his movies are skiers. but they all have a differnt drive for skiing and he shows that.
I like Warren Miller because has been doing it for 50 some odd years, he shows all different aspects, and shows tons of big mountain. And Alaska is usally in it somewhere.
You just aren't getting the same level of skiers in Warren Miller movies. They are kind of cool, and you occasionally see JP or Seth, but for the most part, the reason you haven't heard of the skiers is that they aren't anything special. I think it is cool to watch them from time to time, but I would rather watch newer stuff.
Theres a big ski world outside of what you see on NS. While they might not be this years "big names" in the newest poorboyz film, warren still has the best of the best in his feature sections. You think he is going to send some noname on a nobudget trip to ski insane peaks in alaska or chili. These people are often the top guides and skiers from world renowned heli opperations and other people who have skied the world their entire lives.
Warren miller deserves huge respect for staying at the top of a very challenging industry for over 50yrs simply because he is doing what he loves.
Isnt Warren Miller English?just curious, and his movies are better addapted for a wider range of audiences were as films by people such as level 1 and pbp are solely aimed at us (the "newschoolers")
Warren Miller started the ski movie industry really, he's been doing it for 50 years and his work is well done. He does attract a different crowd though, I know my dad really likes his stuff.
Well with the amount of trips he has, he can't send all of the best people in the world on trips. I have seen people like Doug Cooms, Seth, JP, Johnny Mosely, etc. in these movies. On the other hand, there are a lot of obscure skiers who aren't anything exceptional.
Some people don't take his commentary very well, they get annoyed and stuff. I enjoy it in moderation, so it doesn't really bother me.
By the way, what I am saying about the quality of skiers does not mean I hate his films. I think the trips he takes are sick, and the big mountain footage is really nice to see after long freestyle and urban segments in other films.
i like some of warren miller's stuff, he's just a bit dated. His target audience is middle aged or recreational skiers. but i've met him a few times and he's a nice old dude.
I had respect for warren miller untill early this season i checked what ski movies where coming to my town on tour, warren miller and rage films, warren miller tickets where 16.50 and every cent of that either went to the cost to run the show and to buy warren another 60 plasma tv for his 10,000 sq foot house at the yellow stone club and the rage tickets where 5 bucks and every cent of it went to high school skiing programs,
Miller movies are very different, and alot of that is not in a good way. However, it is sick that he's one of the few people mixing tele and alpine skiers in his movies.
nothing like teh ski movies we all watch.
its like stories unique locations, narrations by him of course and its like traditinon
every year i go and its lots of fun
