Help a newb out...

Hey all, I'm knew here. I'm pretty new to snow sports in general, but have been rollerblading for about 9 years, so I'm pretty comfortable with spins and grinds and what not. I decided to try skiboarding this year.... just this March actuall... so I had a late start. Anyways, I'm a pretty solid dude at 6'2" 240. I've already thrashed two good pairs of skiboards, so I'm learning from my mistakes and switching to twin tips... seems to me like they can take more of a beating than skiboards.

As I said, I'm fairly new to all this and was wondering if any of you out there can recommend some good twin tips, poles and bindings. I've been eyeing the Chronic wides and some of the Ninthward skis... maybe Armada? K2?

As for bindings I guess the 4front 816 binding? Any other suggestions?

I just need something that will be able to handle the impacts I dish out from landings and grinds and what not.

FYI, I live up at Big Bear Lake, so once I'm all set up, I'd definitely be interested in meeting up with a few peeps who can show me the ropes of the sport. Thanks much!

any binding with a 14 din should do you just fine. 16 wouldn't hurt either. and any ski you buy will be vastly better than your skiboards. good choice you have made

yeah and get those 4frnt 816s for ur size the DIN is good enough and they are prolly the best bindings on the market right now in terms of durability

yea mojos and chrons r stiff, with his weight he could flex but hes a noob...so start him o somethin smaller. get 179 fujatives, perfect beginner ski for you

Wow, thanks for the prompt response everyone... this definitely helps in terms of making my decision. At least now I know in what direction I want to head in in terms of size and brand. Thanks much! Any other suggestions are highly welcomed.

fujatives are a good choice, you also might wanna check out salomon 1080 thrusters, make sure ur bindings have a din of 14, boot wise look for a semi softer boot just because it is your first year, probly something along the lines of the salomon x-wave 8's, and poles dont really matter, make sure they are the right height but that is it

oh yeah i forgot about boots. ok, dont take anyone from this sites advice about wat kind of boot to get. just to ur local ski shop, tell them you are new to skiing, try some on, and theyll tell you wats best for your foot

I currently use some Salomon Performa 7s, that felt pretty good skiboarding. I did get quite a bit of shin bruising from them, so I was thinking about the 1080 Foil boots, or maybe the rossignol scratch boots. I have made the mistake of purchasing boots online and as a result I have a good pair of Rossignol Soft Light 1s that are gathering dust in my closet because they don't fit me. I definitely will plan on buying my boots from a shop. Thanks!

fujatives are much to soft for someone 240 lbs.


check out some LINE skis; chronics, or the old Eric Pollard Pro models, they aren't very soft, but they would be good for you.

i'd get like arvs or something somewhat wide arvs in 185 cuz ur a big dude defiently comething at least 180 long

you don't have to ski well anywhere else to ski in the park...so if you're only doing park use the invaders.
If not, then get the regular chronics.

for a beginner i wouldnt recomend anything to amazing or expensive, but K2 kicks but and they are strong to, so for you i would suggest K2 Fujatives and Look or Rossi bindings, poles dont matter anyways so that should be fine.

why is everyone saying fugatives? way soft for a 240 guy wouldnt you say? how about some PE's or something a little more wide and stable. but also maybe not a good choice because they are a heavy twin.. but my go is on the PE's for you.

i rollerbladed for 5 years man. where are you from again?

I'm kind of eyeing some fujatives, PEs, chronics, and some AR5s on ebay right now. When I skiboarded, I snapped in half a skiboard that had medium flex, so I'm definitely not looking for something flexy. I had a stiff skiboard that held up great, but I ended up denting the edge... the skiboard company is replacing the boards due to the warranty. I just need something that will support the abuse I can dish... even though I'm new to the sport, I can bust 540s on skiboards easily, so I'm not THAT much of a newb.

As for where I'm from, I live in Big Bear Lake... but used to rollerblade all over Venice and Santa Monica, when I went to UCLA.

sick man. when those get to you sell them for good money and buy yourself the twins you want. fugatives are famous for there super flexy-ness ( not to be confused wit sexyness)

PE's and chronics are famous for their stiff flex patterns, which is all me, i like stiff. wide is also good too, chronic wide and ARV are both candidates, although ARVs arent AS stiff as the chronics. Also, all head skis are stiff and bombproof. Mojo 80 and Mojo 90 kill it, difference is 80 waist vs. 90 waist. Look into all of the above

oh and NO 4FRNT BINDING!!!
They ripped it off of marker. Go for the look/rossi bindings or salomon. A few people say salomons have problems for me but they're incredibly popular and nothing bad has happened with me in mine. They release whenever they're supposed to, etc.
That's my binding advice for the day.

In fact it was Nordica they "ripped off", because they are both made by Vist.

This guy skis at Big Bear, so my guess is that he skis a lot of park, seeing as the whole mtn is a park. The Fujatives(179) seem like a good idea, along with Chronics(177). These are both solid park skis that are in their third generation(for 06-07). The Chons will be stiffer, but that stiffness will be apprieciated (sp) by someone who has been skiboarding. Hope that helps.

too soft for someone who's 240 lbs, i'm about 155lbs, pretty much the same height, and they're soft enough for me.

for skis get some head mojo 90s, or ninthward firstbloods, or armada ar5 or ar6s...please dont get the fujatives that these people are recommending...your far too heavy for those skis they will be absolute noodles to you...do yourself a favor and get the firstbloods (thats my 1st recommendation) as for bindings get some look p14s or rossignol axial 140s...boots you have to try on to see what fits you...and poles nobody cares about

DON'T LISTEN TO KIDS ON THIS SITE WHO GIVE YOU SKI ADVICE.

If I'm being generous, 9/10 people who offer advice here haven't even the slightest idea what they're talking about and just want to look like they know something. Unless you know how to pick out the good info sources than the bad (which would require your already being somewhat well versed in ski equipment), DO NOT TRUST this forum for your purchase decisions. Asking a tech is dubious, but very probably has a better success rate than here.
