naw dude, not fear, i ride em, and the inside edge ripped out and the nose has delaminated from the base. but when they weren't broke the skis are pretty sick, just not 'dependable'

from what i have heard, Salomon has a wood core version of the 1080 coming out next year or in the near future, but its only availible to sponcerd athleates and shop employes.

only problem with that wood core/spaceframe combo is that they have to mill the core. I'd think that makes it significantly less structurally stable.

why wouldn't they just make the wood ones available to the general public? and why would they have to mill the wood... if you use wood, you don't need space frame, if you want to keep the same flex pattern, they could just use a torsion box thing like k2.

yeah, but what i'm saying is....
they use spaceframe to stiffen the ski in certain spots, because lets face it, foam is soft.
If they go to a wood core, why would they still need the spaceframe shape?

Spaceframe is made to lessen weight at the tip and tail of the ski. Using a wood core means you have to make it that shape. So you have to mill it, which would decrease the structural integrity.

well look at it this way, i never seen foam delam. When the pocket rockets and 03 10's came out, 4 outa 5 delaminated. Get the picture. I mean i know its something to do with the topsheet as well, but still.

I have the 03 1080s and haven't had any problems yet. They don't carve as well as normal skis but that's why they are twin tipped. And if you do break them warrenty them! Simple as that!

Foam cores are weak... i had older pow airs with a foam core, and they were soft and dead, now i have the PEs... they are not as soft... but still pretty soft... they different is that they have pop, life, and energy. That would be retarded to make a wood core 1080 and not sell it to the public... everyone would want it and not be able to get it. And for the milling spaceframe thing... what if they had a wood core that went all the way from tip to tail and instead of changing into the spaceframe, they had foam for the spaceframe part.

why have paid atheletes promoting a product that is not even available to the public? i think that the pros getting better skis than the public represents a disturbing trend in this sport. right cnow even the highest level pros, like seth morrison, are skiing retail skis. what that means is that the retail skis have to be high quality, ause the pros have to use them too. that is good news for us mortals, cause we get a good product. if the industry shifts to having 'pro only' models, that means that they can make shitty products for us, but the pros still stay happy.

How do you know that pros are skiing retail skis? just cause they look the same does not mean that they are built the same. JUst like how when tanner was with rossi, he wasnt riding the stock scratch, his was considerably stiffer.

There must be something to the space frame BS, as Salomon has gone nearly %100 spaceframe through their line next year, personally I like the original 1080 much better than the '03. Then again I love my '03 Mike Nicks even more, it's definetly not what everyone else likes, but what YOU like...
