i'm 5'10, 140 lbs, do mostly freeriding and trail riding.
1. how much travel do you figure i should have in a fork and frame?
2. should i get hydraulic disk brakes or stick with mechanical?
are there any other parts you recommend i keep in mind? i'm planning on getting a decent bike in the near future.. last one got stolen, and i really want to get into it this summer
thanks alot,
justin

most definitly hydrolic brakes. fox makes a good fork for travel ajustments on the fly. goes from like 110 to 150. also check out the manitou shermans? think thats what their called. good freeride single crown fork.

definitely discs.
as for travel, you dont need much if you're just trail riding. in fact you can have too much.
check out a specialised epic or something

Since you're into freeride too, I'd look into something with around 6-7" of travel. As for the brakes, definitely go hydraulic, mechanical is no good on a big downhill!

Hydros over mech if you can afford it.
5-6" front and rear is money for legit freeride at 140lbs.
Go with an '05 Specialized Enduro, Kona Coiler or the new Coilair, or a Santa Cruz Heckler if you can fork out the dough. Other bikes to consider that may be slightly better prices: Giant Reign, Trek Liquid, etc.

I wouldn't go over 6, maybe 6.5 in the back... for a fork I would definately find one that is adjustable between like 100ish and 150ish. If you are into takin care of and workin on your bike and have the cash get hyrdaulic brakes, but if you want some lower maintenence cheaper stuff mechanical ones work fine for trail riding.

yea a coiler would be a pretty good pick, or the specialized enduro sx trail is pretty sick, but not quite as good a value as far as what components you'll get on it, but it pedals incredibly well.
