in the wake of the recent ski patroller tragety, today mammoth witnessed another accident. The trail Climax, which is a very open trail off the top of the mountain for those that don't know, avalanched right after opening the gondola to the top. I can't say much now as far as the outcome, but I will be sure to post as news comes in. I'm at the Main Lodge, so I will know as soon as anyone knows. It's been an impressive, yet scary year at Mammoth and I ask everyone to send us some good vibes.
One of the patrollers (Walter Rosenthal) that was killed last week by the vent on Mammoth was the Avalanche Trouble Shooter and researcher. It was his job to determine the snow stability and what-not.
I wouldn't know, but i would expect that they just hired some random Avalanche guy that didn't know the mountain as well as Rosenthal did.
this is why i don't like the whole in-bounds off piste thing.
i mean in europe we still trust the the mountain guys who blast for avalanches but we still carry bc stuff off piste anywere. but you guys seem pretty comfortable without while skiing in-bounds but off piste right?!
unless i'm wrong and in bounds and piste are the same thing.
either way it sounds like everyhting is going in the good direction, good vibes in mamoths direction.
in north america, everything inbounds is considered in piste, even if the trail is not outlined and groomed. anything beyond the ski area boundry is off piste that you ski at your own danger.
this has been a very bad year for skiing, alot of accidents, and some deaths. Not good at all. i am lucky since i live in ontario so i don't have to worry about avalanches. I hope everyone survived that avalanche if not it is a tragedy.
