G'day,
Myself and 2 other mates are 19, and heading over to whistler at the end of the year (29th of November) for 3 months.
We not going through any of the programs, and have spoken to mates who did it ths year.
So were organising our own flights, and workig visas, and getting social security stuff over there.
were thinking of rocking up, with a hostel booked for approx 5 nights, while we find a place to stay for the 3 month period. and get our bearings.
We all want to work over there approx. 4 days a week or something like that
we heard that if u do this thing for the mountain where u show people around for 6 hours a week you get a free season pass, and a few other mountain benefits. is this true?
do you have any advice for us? things to do/not to do?
we about to book our flights now so any advice would be much appreciated.
cheers

thats harsh man.... ^^
to answer ur question. yes, its called being a mountain host and they usually hire people who've lived for a while and know the mountain really well.. (ie long time locals). There are other volunteer jobs that require once a week as well for a free pass. like working Events, the race centre, seat seekers in the restaurants, mtn safety(do this and we'll hit you) etc. but all these jobs are generally interviewed for in early nov.

yea, if you show up at the end of november most of the on-hill jobs will be taken, 'cause the job fair is like late october or some shit like that.

You lost me at "G'day".
...No really, just wing it. Get your flights and paperwork then get into town in September and figure things out for yourself. That's what I did and it all worked out.

Unfortunately due to university i can't leave till end of november. Does anyone have recomendations on where i should be staying, value for money but also close to whistler village. i was thinking blueberry hill? Also if its hard to get a host job then what jobs do you suggest getting? Im going to miss the job fair by the sounds of it, is it hard to get a job after that. are there any classified i can look at online so i can apply for jobs online?

Over the last few years my brother and I have both done exactly what you're looking to do. We both turned up at end of Nov because of Uni exams and got jobs. If you miss the jobs fair there are less jobs around but still heaps as long as you're not too picky, and of course a lot of people get fired after a few weeks so their jobs become vacatn again.
I ened up working in the law office in 03/04 and my brother as an instructor this season. Also look at working at some of the hotels, my friend worked at the Westin and got sweet staff accom as well. Getting good accom will probably be harder than getting a job.
If you got any specific questions just pm me.

id try and arrange accomadation BEFORE u got here if you can but thats easier said that done but definitely less frustrating than trying to find accomdation at the same time as every other tom dick harry and aussie who didnt get the job with the mountain they were expecting to get.

Look for places in Creekside. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Why creekside? Isn't it quite far away from whistler village? How long does it take to get the the gondola's? Also if your going out do people go out in creekside or do they go into whisler village.
Thanks guys for all your responses its really appreciated.

Creekside has its own gondola... and it's a few minutes by bus to the village from there anyway.

So do you think creekside would be the best value for money place to stay?
Also do you thin its better getting a job with a place that offers a ski pass as part of the job, or get another job that doesn't but does that mean they may pay more?

Dude, figure it out for yourself, that's half the fun. Personally, I live in Creekside and work for an independant shop and wouldn't have it any other way.

how ya goin', this trips going to be heaps epic mate.
i hope it works out for you. your basically going to need a bus pass no matter waht. so it doesnt really matter where you stay, the longest bus ride is going to be maybe 15 minutes the long way.
alpine is the cheapest usually, creekside is not, but it has shops and a gondola.
just giver,
All times are Eastern (-5)
