Terry fox deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame because he raised awareness of cancer and inspired millions of Canadians and people worldwide. In 1977 Terry was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. To stop the spread of cancer, doctors amputated his leg - six inches (15 cm) above the knee. Terry then learned how to use an artificial leg. After three weeks he was walking. (Terry never forgot his experience in the hospital he was angry how little money was spent on cancer research in Canada. He turned his anger into a mission he would run across the country to raise both awareness and money for his fight against cancer.1) Others who had suffered were also never forgotten in the eyes of Terry. He deiced to stand up for others and for him to raise awareness for cancer. “That's the thing about cancer. I'm not the only one. It happens all the time, to other people. I'm not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It'll inspire more people. I could have sat on my rear end, I could have forgotten what I'd seen in the hospital, but I didn't.”2 He decided to run across the country and give the public knowledge and understanding about this fatal disease. This is what he intended to do and he did exactly that. (He averaged 43 km (26 miles) per day, and as he progressed across six provinces in Canada, the image of a solitary young man running slowly on an artificial leg drew increasing attention from newspapers and television.3 ) Terry Fox’s name is known world wide and is an image in the hopeful eyes of citizens suffering from cancer. Terry deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame because of the inspiration and faith he gave to millions of Canadians and people worldwide.
Terry’s mission achieved awareness for cancer and inspired millions of people but also he raised millions of dollars. Terry fox deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame because he raised money for cancer research pushing it forward and giving hope to many. When Terry started his Marathon of Hope he had a dream. His dream was to collect one dollar form every Canadian. During this time Canada’s population was 24 million showing it would be no easy feat. (Terry’s dream was realized on February 1981: the marathon of hope raised $24.1 million for cancer research.2) This progressed even after Terry had died. (On Sept. 13, 1981, the first Terry Fox Run was held. More than 300,000 Canadians took part in the event at 760 sites across the country. The run raised $3.5 million. The Terry Fox Run is a family affair for the Foxes.1) This event goes on annually to this date and now Terry Fox has raised more money then he could have ever dreamed of. (To date, more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.22) Terry was the start of something bigger than he could ever imagine. Terry’s efforts raised millions and have boosted cancer research greatly earning him the right to be in the Canadian hall of fame.
Mr. Fox raised millions but he also proved to people that anything is possible. Terry fox deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame because He showed great dedication and determination towards his cause and proved that anything is possible if you believe.. Tarry was a marvelous example of what is possible with determination and dedication. Even before his run he showed unmatchable dedication. (Terry trained for 15 months, running 3,159 miles, running until his stump was raw and bleeding, running every day for 101 days, until he could run 23 miles a day.2) His determination was shown greatly through his run proving people wrong and breaking many barriers. He'd start before dawn every morning, running in shorts and a T-shirt printed with a map of Canada. He wasn't ashamed of his disability. Terry ran about 42 kilometers each day no matter the weather – freezing rain, high winds, even snow. Skeptics thought he'd never make it past New Brunswick but he proved them wrong.1 He was a hero. (He'd run through six provinces and now was two-thirds of the way home. He'd run close to a marathon a day, for 143 days. No mean achievement for an able-bodied runner, an extraordinary accomplishment for an amputee.2 Terry Fox has proved too many what dedication and determination can do he has helped many along the way thus he should be accepted into the Canadian hall of fame.
