RIP - Doug Coombs killed in Avalanche today

I am making a new thread because the first post of the other one seemed to be confusing people.
Doug Coombs, one of the most prolific ski mountaineers ever, was sadly killed today in an avalanche around La Grave.
This is just another hit to a community that has expirenced way too much tragedy this season.
My hopes and prays are for his family. ++++++++ Vibes to his wife Emily and baby son David. I can't even imagine what they are going thru.
I can't even believe how empty/hurt this is making me. I've never even met Coombs.
Everyone - stay safe and don't take life for granted. Doug was one of the most knowledgeable BC users in the world. He knew as much as anyone on travelling safely in the BC and dealing with avalanche hazard.
RIP Doug Coombs

i overheard someone talking about this earlier today. i thought there was no way it could be true. i couldn't fathom that someone of his knowledge, his skill and his experience could get in such a mess. sadly, it happened.
RIP to one of skiing's greats.

for those who don't know who he was...
He is his brief resume
"I've logged over 130 first descents, but I also won the World Extreme Skiing Championships in 1990 and '92. I did the 24 Hours of Aspen, and finished second and third in that. I've also won the national powder 8's three times and finished second twice and third once in the world powder 8's. And I started the first heli operation in Valdez back in '94 and have pioneered about 140 descents of 3,000 vert or more. I also started the first ever steeps camp in Jackson Hole and I now run steeps camps in La Grave, France, and Verbier, Switzerland."

This is insane.
HUGE loss to skiing as a whole.
Best wishes to everyone touched by his life, and I hope he's remembered for a long time to come, as he accomplished alot in his days, and was definitly a household name in big mountain skiing.

this is an incredibly sad and sobering moment for all of skiing. doug was admired and respected across the globe and will be deeply missed. i only hope his family can find some sort of solace in the fact that he died doing what he truly loved. rest in peace...

and to all you who dont know this guy(hard to imagine that, but he wasnt a park skier) he is a big mountain and BC legend. this man was elite, rivaled only by morrison, mckonkey and some others. he was also influencial to the birth of real big mountain skiing and guiding and BC exploring. but god damn...i still cant believe it.

Damn, a legend in his own right, DC was the man.
I find it qutie moving that everyone respects him so much when most of you are too young to really appreciate just who he was. I've never met the guy but I've spent hours of class time reliving his old video segments, drooling over K2 posters of him dropping sick pillow lines on old straight skis and ripping powder 8's with Scott Shmidt.
DC was a pioneer, the Seth Morrison of yester-generation, he was one of the Glen Plakes and Scot Shmidts, back when K2 was the only brand pushing freeskiing. these guys were true skibums, they really did live on the bones of their asses and they were some of the best our game has ever seen. True pioneers and true progressors,
Tragedy? Doesn't even begin to describe it...

geez that's horrible
Avalanches are such a tragedy, but they do occur and they take people's lives: it's a reality. But when someone like that dies, it really sobers things up.

I'm embarassed to say it, but I hardly recongized the name... However, after doing a lot of reading about him, it's clear that our sport has lost one of our founding fathers. RIP Doug, at least you died doing what you loved.

RIP coombs, i have multiple Doug Coombs photos up in my room still, next to Scott and glen he was one of my heros for sure. I bought k2 msl's cause coombs was riding them in the ad. I can still picture him talking about out running a big sluff in a tgr movie a while back. He was the man for a long time, a great long career, just wish i could have met him. The man made marmot gear seem really cool to me too, good enough for doug good enough for me... just lots of good memories of the man.
