I'm looking for basically an all around good car. Don't need something super fast or something super cool looking. Just good in snow, semi fuel efficient, and just gets me around. I like the idea of a SUV or wagon, but some sedans intrigue me. Right now I'm looking at:
Subaru WRX
Subaru Outback
Hyundia Santa Fe
Toyota Highlander
Honda CR-V
I like all of the cars, but I'm unsure of how the Hyundai or Honda performs in the snow. I knwo the Subarus and Toyotas perform well in most anything and Toyotas get awesome ratings. Any suggestions or preferences?Any of you drive any of these? What do you think?I'm kind of leaning towards the Hyundia or Toyota right now.

those cars you listed go from cheap to rather expensive...look for used sedans. never buy used sports cars

Buy the new VW GTI without any options, and it'll run you around 22k. Best new car on the market for its price in my opinion.

Toyota Corolla's are generally good for snow because they are wider. If your going subaru, get a sti, they are nasty.

I would stick with the subie. They run forever. I wouldn't buy hyundai, and I think your best bet for the snow will be the WRX/Outback. And about toyota's being good in the snow, they aren't much better than the hondas. It's really dependant on just if its fwd or rwd, or awd, and engine placement, and they ar epretty much all in the front. So FWD or AWD is your best bet.

definitly need a little more info about your situation. like how much money you have or can spend, if your looking at new or used. and if used how new or old? heres just a little info and insight i have about each car pertaining to what you seem to be looking for in a car
Subaru WRX- from what youve said i would look into the base imprezza version(non-turbo). still great AWD, cheaper, better gas mileage and if your not looking for something fast or sporty then it sounds like you would benefit more from haveing the non turbo version. also likely to last longer without the strain of turbo boost on the engine.
Subaru Outback- solid car, easy to find, lots of space, awd, decent gas mileage. definitly a skiers top ranked car.
Hyundia Santa Fe- personally im always going to be iffy about hyundai's. 3 people who i personally know bought brand new ones and they were lemons so the dealer took them back. not saying thats the case with all or even the majority of the cars but it has definitly turned me away from hyundai a little more.
Toyota Highlander- definitly the largest of all your choices. my uncle has one and he loves it(bought it new). ups: great in snow and bad weather, tons of space, reliable and will last a long time. downs: worst gas mileage of all your choices(might be close to a turbo wrx i dont know the specs for sure), probably most expensive if your looking for a used one since they started making them not too long ago.
Honda CR-V: reliable, good amount of space, should tackle snow no problem. dont know a ton about the suv but i do know a good number of people that have them and they all love them.
good luck man

Subaru, solid cars, AWD is a must for snow and ice. They also are very highly rated in crash tests. Go for a Legacy or an Impreza, like I did.

If you are looking at something CR-Vish, look at the Nissan X-Trail if it is available in your country.

What's your budget? Since you're looking at the WRX, if you're considering the outback you might want to look into the H6 version. I'm driving one right now and it's pretty sweet, ~22-26 mpg, great handling, and about a 130 mph top speed. I'd lean more toward that if I were you just for insurance purposes, the WRX falls under the sports car category so you'll be spending huge amounts of money just to insure it.

I'm looking for a used car. Needs to have AWD/4wheel. I don't really want to spend more than 10k, but can go up to around 12-13k.
2003 Sante Fes are going for around 12k
2000 Subaru Impreza is going for around 9.5K
Subaru Outbacks I havent seen a lot of for under 14K
Highlanders I'm not finding a lot of and if I am they way too much to even talk down to 12K
1999 CR-V is going for about 11K
I'm sure the dealerships will have more of the Subarus. I'm going to check them out this weekend. I like the Outback H6 and Outback Sedans. I'll probably be checking out VW too this weekend, just to see what else I like and dont like. Thanks for the info guys.

Alright. First car. I would NOT get a WRX.
Just simply because having a "powerful" car(in proportion to the most other cars on the road) as your first car just sets you up for trouble. Not saying you're a shitty driver, but you won't know how to handle it.
Also, just wanna clear up the misconception. The only time a turbo car gets bad gas mileage, is if you are just given'r all the time. If you have any foot control, and self control to keep the car atlow boost or no boost under accell. then you'll nearly see the same gas mileage as the Subaru 2.5rs.
If it's your first car, I'd go with a non-turbo Subaru of some sort. The WRX just isn't a good "first car" if you ask me. Although I think they are great cars, I don't think they are good first cars.

gotta rep the jeeps. i love my ZJ. but it looks like you want decent gas mileage, id go with the legacy, its a dependaple engine with a decent awd system. crv are cheap and you can easily tell it. my 13 yr old jeep with 200,000 miles is nicer on the inside that my buddies 2002 crv. the hundyis are lower than the crv imo. they are cheap, but efficient for what they are. the toyota i dont know myuch about.

they get decent mileage for what they are. about 16-18 in the city and about 22-24 highway. these may be better if you have the 6speed manual

last sat, i just bought 2000 subaru outback wagon manual for 10,600 with 3 years warrenty on it and its sweet. the last car was 1990 subaur legacy wagon with turbo, i didn't like the turbo that much and it was wasting a lot of gas. the new one saves so much more gas compared to my old car. You should get manual if you can find one.

while the rex is a sweet car they absoluty suck for skiing becasue the rear seat dosent fold done, subbies do last for ever and i would higly recomend a 95-97 legacy wagon. for those breif years all subarus were designed by the head designer from mercedes, therefore those model year subarus drive like a mercedes, not a japanese econo box. i recomnd the legacy 2. becsue its awd, 2. its got a crap load of room in the back, and two its generally less fancy than the outback and gets better mielage.

yeah you can do that but you can also shift at the factory recommended shift points to get super gas mileage. but the reality of it is that most people dont do that. if you have a turbo car and the same car without the turbo. and drive them so that they get the same mpg then what is the point of having the turbo on the one? its so easy to get boost addicted and plenty of people drive at high enough rpms that if you put them in a turbo car they would have the turbo spooling a good ammount of the time. also yes turbo cars only get really bad gas mileage when your layin on the gas and pushing more boost but for everyday normal driving they will still get somewhat worse mpg when compared to the same driving in a non turbo version.

If you get a subaru with a non-turbo 2.5 liter engine make sure it's one that was made after 2000. The reason for this is that before 2000 they were having problems with the head gaskets blowing out by the time the car hit 100,000 miles, so unless you have the time and equipment to fix it that could be a costly investment. They have fixed that problem now, but unfortunately the post-1999 engines are single overhead cam, which kind of sucks if you have any plans to do serious modification to the engine. It's still a really fun engine though, and you can easily get 180-200 hp out of one without adding a turbo.

I actually looked at the VWs,Hyundias, Nissans, and Hondas today. I really liked the Passats.Super nice. The Santa Fes werent bad either. Not sure about performance though. i'll have to look into that. The older CRVs i wasnt really into though. I liked the older Pathfinders and Xterras. The 2000 pathfinder was really nice. Really smooth ride. The Xterras were nice too, but not sure about gas mileage(17 mpg). Overall my favorites were the Passats and Pathfinders.

My friend has a crv with all wheel drive and a stick, and he pretty much owns up in it. It snowed about a foot of powdery snow this winter, and we took it to our high school and drove it up a steep snow covered hill, no problem. It is probably a little underpowered with a base engine, but the awd is fine in the snow with a stick if you can handle it.

Again, self control is what it is.
I've got a '95 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. It's still on t25 turbo, but with a 6-bolt motor after the crank walked on the original motor.
I have long since gotten over my "boost-addiction." I get an average of 25-30mpg with back road driving. Lots of hills.
Although my addiction to the speed has worn off, I will never want a car with less power than what the car currently has. I like the fact that I have the power there to pull out of a parking lot quickly and safely when I need to. And as the car stands, with little more than the motor swap and free mods, the car runs high 13 second 1/4 mile passes.
And fact of the matter is, having a turbocharged I4 is the best way to get that power while still maintaining a good balance of power.
