Well here it is. I was supposed to go last month to Utah to do some filming, Chucky was supposed to fly in from Big Bear and meet up with me halfway through the trip. Everything looked like it was going to be an incredible, productive week.
Then on the saturday I checked the weather... we had been watching a big storm brewing on the pacific shelf that carried loads of promise for major precipitation on the western seaboard.
Unfortunately.. on Saturday the Jetstream took a BIG turn up.
It was raining at altitudes about 10,000 ft in the Cottonwood, in fact it was raining all the way up to northern Washington state.
Everything was ruined.. Even Mt. Hood which was our fallback was going to shit.
What to do?.. Well I frantically looked up all the locations above the warm southwesterly flow for snow.
I found Mt. Washington.
Yes.. I have known of it's existance, but due in part to its small presence and the fact that I live in Whistler.. I failed to ever check it out.
Well it was dumping there.
So we scrubbed the stateside and thought we would spend two days on the Island and then chase the storm into the Kootenays.
Two Days turned into a week and a half.
We bought season passes.
This little gem of a mountain is almost an undiscovered paradise. It was mind numbing to see so much untouched available powder UNDER THE LIFT.
Yes.. there were "busy" days.. when school busses full of kids came.
But in one and a half weeks.. I think I made ten turns that were not in knee or waist deep powder.
Don't be fooled though.. this is not some silly little bunny hill either.. if you look you will find some outrageous lines, with ridiculous levels of exposure accessible from a lift.. and returning to a lift.
it's all just steps away.
I will add some pics.

Glad to hear you like it, thats where I ski every weekend, well almost every weekend. But after skiing there for the last 13 years you get bored of it. Its a great family mountain, lost of varried terrain, but theres nothing really new except for the outback which is sick. Our park is ok, we need rails, and the snow we get is usually heavy. Plus the mountain management sucks. But Mt. Washington is a sick place, more people should come.

Yup, i ski washington all the time, most weekends and it pretty much has it all, only in small doses, the park is decent but lacks consitency. Fun mountain though, needs more of a party aspect though, so come all

how can u diss up the park like that, yes our park crew is lazy and all they doo is poo pack each other day, but the monthly occurance of them working hard turns for the best and we have an amazing park for jumps, can claim that we have the biggest jumps in western canada, wayyy bigger then blackcombs dinky little jumps and look at our 530 cm fuckin base too!

I haven't been up there in like 3 years... but it's always been pretty amazing... it does get crowded though sometimes.

I thought the park was amazing, way huger jumps than Blackcombs. Totally suprised that a small out of the way moutain would have stuff that big.... but I guess when you have that much snow it makes it easy to build them up. Some 50's, 60's (was that last one a 60? whatever it was, it was huge and awesome). Yeah theres no rails but whatever, jumps are more fun anyways.
Its crazy too because here you need to buy a pass, sign waivers, you're forced to wear a helmet.... at Mt Washington they barely have a rope up. It's basically a free-for-all.
I heart Mount Washington

Thanks Ames..
Ok.. so a poster said that the Management sucks.. and perhaps it does.
BUT....
Any mountain management that posts a sign at the bottom of the single person Platter lift that states:
"This platter is designed to be ridden by one person at a time, doing otherwise the riders assume all risk.... management"
Well that mountain management has a thing or two right upstairs.
I even asked patrol about it.. his response.
"What do I care if you put five people on it.. I just suggest you be the one in front not behind"
As Skipp said:
I Heart Mt. Washington.
I can tell you from a photographers perspective that this mountain works.. it is right in so many ways.
Oh ya..
One other thing I found unbelieveable..
right at the bottom of the backside lift (the boomerang) not 100ft away.. people were ripping on sleds.. not staff.. just random sledders finding lines...
I guess there is not a lot of restriction on sled access.... and this simly means that some of the most phenomenal sub alpine terrain I have ever seen is within minutes grasp.

Mt washington should be avoided at all cost !
Sure they have huge park jumps ! Sure the outback is a killer on tuesday after its been puking out for three days and your the only one in the lift line. But Mt washington couldn't give a flying fuck about newschoolers like you and me. They are a family hill and all they want is Mom , Dad, and the kids to clog up there lift lines and give them money.
Mt washington is the most poorly run ski hill out there.
There is a far better place on Vancouver Island. You'll just have to find it for yourself.

Cain rules and thats all there is to it !
If Washinton had a good pipe and put more effort into setting up jibs it would be sweet place for park riding.
There is too much pow, too little lift lines, and too much to explore at Cain For me to want to go to Wash on the weekend ever again.

yea I'd also say that we have really interesting people who come in the park and give inspirational speeches about the season winding down, time to fucking giver and all that...AND we didn't have a single busy day this year except for the last.
but it is disheartening when the park crew comes in with rakes and paint and shovels, only to put the jibs deeper into the forest instead of taking them out.

wow can't believe all the hype over washed up. this january was unreal though. but seriouly too many people for the terrain to handle, gets tracked out hella quick

Tracked out????
Seriously you have to have NEVER skied Whistler after a powder day to say that Washington gets tracked out too fast.
Over 8000 acres in Whistler and you will be lucky if you get three good clean runs after a dump..
And even for that you have to really hunt or know where to go.. (the unfortunate thing is that EVERYONE really knows where to go)

mt washington is statistically proven to be one of the most crowded hills in canada. (skier visits per lift capacity).
All times are Eastern (-5)
