- Throughout my six long years of riding with skiers and boarders I have come across lots of questions like, Who goes bigger? and Which is more stylee? Those ones were pretty easy in that they are about equal depending on the skier or rider. One statement kind of stumped me though. 'Skiers are better though because we came first.' The statement is no doubt false but a question can be derived from it that will make you think twice.



I started off listening to peoples theories on what was up. I heard lots of different opinions. 'The board came first because people were sliding down hills on them and stood up on them and then split them into two'. 'The skiis had to of come first, just look at roller skates. They eventually evolutionized into skateboards.' None of this was helping, so I headed to the books. I was suprised to find that the first evidence of any skiing at all comes from Stone Age rock carvings discovered around the Arctic rim, many showing ski-shod hunters in hot pursuit of game in lands recently uncovered by the retreat of the continental glaciers. The time-frame is the same as that of Egyptian pyramid-building. Snow boards however, I wasn't so amazed. The first Snowboard-like-invention was built in 1929 by M.J. 'Jack' Burchett. He cut out a plank of plywood and secured his feet with a length of clothesline and horse reins. Thus the first 'Snowboard' was invented. I thought it was going to be a close fight but I was way off. It is those hardcore Scandinavians. So I suppose skiers have some bragging rights, some very old bragging rights. - Evan Jones

First there were skis, then this guy invented this thing called the Snurfer, which was like two pairs of skis but stuck together (sorta like a monoski) then after a few years came the snowboard.
