Aside from lift-accessible BC at Mammoth, there are an infinite number of hike-to routes near town in the Sherwins. Plenty of sick looking coloirs and open powder fields.
In-bounds riding outside the park also kicks major ass.
dragons tail to the lakes is sick...but gets hit hard by sun and everyone and their mom skis it.
With alot of effort the peaks surrounding mammoth offer some of THE sickest backcountry in the lower 48.
Last january we were skiing 6000-vert runs down to the valley floor from Whitney to peaks north of Bishop...
if your lucky, and have the gear a quick snowmobile poach up tioga pass rewards you with PLUMP dana coulior with major winter snowpack vert...
I have peaked over the easter side of Tiga towards yosemtite and with the right snow and camping gear there are some once in a lifetime descents to be had
But your on Newschoolers, so your prob not looking for anything more than a quicky, and mammoth does not have all that much to offer in those regards
Squaw has sick IN-BOUNDS terrain. KT, the Palisades, Granite Peak, Silverado, Broken Arrow...The list goes on and on. The lift accessed and hikable terrain there is unbelievable, hence it is home to McConkey, Kreitler, Gaffneys, CR JT Holmes...But there is no actual backcountry access from squaw. There are no gates, you are not allowed to ski from the resort out of the boundaries. Plenty of people have poached the backside of KT, but be careful, the patrol there does not fuck around.
