i know the chart shows fuel efficient SUV, becuase the point i was trying to make is that there are responsible choices for consumers who want an SUV. everyone already knows that there are SUV's out there that get 10mpg, but i included some of those anyways. but basically, you shouldn't go badmouthing all suvs, and say that a wagon would be a better choice, because in a lot of cases, it isn't. for example, if you put one of those 'tickets' on a rav4, you'd be a dick, especially if you drive an outback.

i can see that in some situations its necessary to have an SUV but it pisses me off when i see moms drivng around in suburbans and excursions there is no need to have a huge ass SUV like that. Lots of cars get good traction volvos, audis, subarus all drive really good in the snow. Unless you live somewhere where it snows a ton just become a better drver in the snow and quit depending on a gigantic SUV to get you somewhere. I have an old shitty rear wheel volvo and i havent gone off the road yet but my friend with a brand new tahoe drove way off the road the first time it snowed.

well i have an Explorer, and i love it, ya it is an SUV but its not huge and it holds alot of people and alot of my shit, it handles great in the snow, it handles better in the snow then ne other car i know. i also drive my dads 2001 oldsmoble Bravada, it is a SUV too and it is like the trail blazer, it is good looking and has a great inside, but the 4 wheel drive in that car doesn't work, so last night i had to drive home in 2nd and 1st geer because it has rained then snowed so the roads were really scarey. ya Suv's eat up gas but when you really need um, like in the snow they are great, i know my mom's BMW doesn't use negas, but that car sucks in the snow. Suv's aren't that bad of cars and ya mom's with surburbans and vans can be annoying but they get those cars because they have kids and need to beable to handle all that kid shit.

i think its funny that on ford's website they list the mpg for the excursion as N/A. thats complete bullshit. as if ford doesn't know what that beast gets for mileage. they show it for their other cars. they just don't want people to realize that its something like 7mpg or whatever. HUMMER does the same thing, mileage N/A.

jsof9, aperintly you did not read the post I made about my moms car crash -it is in this thread someware. you should. If my mom had not just bought that brand new Passat Wagon she would be FUCKING DEAD right now simply because the person who caused the accedent was in a SUV. but thanx to the awsome safety features of that car she is still around without a scrach.

Likewise if there wasn't such a thing as SUVs my moms car might not be totaled right now...

might not.. but even if you take away SUV's there's still some pretty big vehicles out there... vans, busses, dump trucks, 18-wheelers, motorhomes, the weinermobile...

Well if everyone would just go to the site and read what its all about. Its anti SUV in the cities. You are right Coyote, this thread really shouldn't be anti-SUV but anti-gasguzzling. There is no need to ticket a RAV4, they are smaller than the Suburus you mentioned and get the same gas mileage. Its great companies like Honda are stepping up and making more enviromentally friendly SUVs, but until a majority of SUVs are good for the environment, I am still against SUVs.

My only problem with SUVs are that the driver is sitting high upon the road. Some smaller vehicles, (motorcycles) get rearended and some riders are killed because the driver didn't see them.
Otherwise, to get into things that are bad to the earth...umm everything....

fuck i almost died in a car wreck, but i was in my explorer which is a tank. we were turning left and the car was going straight through the light and hit my car, the other car was nearly totaled and my car only the rear bumper and the back wheel well fucked up. SUV are great cars and i feel much safer in my explorer than a lil car

Suvs may be gas guzzlers but 4 wheel drive always comes in handy and without it I wouldn't be able to ski nearly as much. Jeep is the best suv made!!

Turbo, AWD sports cars are where its at. My car will outrun, outstop and outcorner any SUV any time plus I get better mileage. Which means I get to the hill faster and cheaper than Jonny SUV.

the new ford explorers only have like 5' of ground clearance, because the soccer mom's who pilot this thing like a minivan grocery getter prefer a softer ride, so they put in an independant rear suspension. independant rear suspension on a 4X4? brilliant job ford. the shit hangs down so low in the back...

ground clearance can be an isssue in REALLY nasty conditions. My car has a viscous clutch, not just an open differential - but that is a good point, not all cars have this.

Suv's Suck because driving a 15 mpg SUV (the average SUV) wastes the same amount of energy as leaving your refridgerator door open for 6 years, TV on for 26 years, and your bathroom light burning for 28 years. Now most people who drive SUV's in the city(where lots of SUV's are owned) make no use out of their SUV and just drive it in the city.

As for people who think their making use out of it... guess what...THEIR NOT.. Back wheel drive is ALMOST just as good in snow as four wheel drive. And in the snow...SUV's are more likely to get in crashes in the snow.

Suv's are a horrible choice of car and the news has brainwashed all owners to buy one for some odd reason.

And as for those of you who have an SUV for your 5 kids and 5 dogs..well guess what....having 5 kids these days and 5 dogs is an immature choice you made and the environment shouldn't have to suffer the consequences.

And 4 Wheel Drive is much better than rear wheel drive. In snow rear wheel drive is horrible. Front Wheel, 4 Wheel and All Wheel Drive are all much better. I don't particaly care for SUVs but please get your facts straight.

rear wheel drive is not a problem for anyone that knows how to properly and responsibly drive one in any conditions, granted it might not be as easy but in the grand scheme of things that is going to be good so people actually pay attention to their driving. as far as suv goes they serve good purposes in a lot of cases but its the yuppy bitches out there who dont know how to drive them and drive them because they are popular that are a major problem

agreed that if you know how to handle rear wheel drive properly you shouldnt have a big problem driving in bad weather...but there are waaaay to many people who dont know how and thats where we get into problems. Although its just as bad as the people who think they are invincible cause they have 4wd SUVS or a frontwheel drive with no experience. The average person who buys and SUV right no wdoes just get it cause its popular and they feel big and important. I refuse to call my old pathfinder an SUV because of it...its a truck as far as I am concerned. I bought it cause it is super practical, lots of room and I do 20,000km a winter so yes I do run into some shitty weather...its also been off road and all that. The people who buy them to be bigger and better is the definition of excessive...but then again...who really needs a car that does 250km/hr??? isnt that a little excessive too??

You are completly right. It shouldn't make a difference what drive it is as long as you are a good driver. I am just saying Front, AWD and 4 wheel drive generally handel better in poor conditions. Basically, for rear wheel just be really soft on the accelerator and you'll be fine.
