FORT MYERS - Blessed with a surplus of pitching, the Red Sox today consummated trade talks with the Cincinnati Reds on a deal that will bring outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Boston.
According to sources, the Sox have sent right-hander Bronson Arroyo to the Reds in exchange for the 24-year-old Pena, who batted .254 with 19 home runs and 51 RBI last season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Pena has been especially effective against left-handers during his career and will likely serve as a complement to the left-handed-hitting Trot Nixon, who has had difficulty agfainst left-handers during his career.
Pena, who is due to earn $1.25 million this year, is not eligible for agency for another three seasons. In that way, he was a perfect match for Arroyo, who recently signed a three-year, $11.25 million contract.
Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has scheduled a 12:30 p.m. conference call to announce the deal.
Arroyo could not immediately be reached for comment, but was said to be stunned by the news of the trade. Against the advice of his agents, the pitcher signed a contract for below-market value, theorizing that it would allow him to remain with the Red Sox.
Instead, it made him more tradeable.

the only boston fans or people in boston that care about the loss of arroyo are 15-16 year old girls

boston may have an acceptable bullpen but i think you are really not giving arroyo the credit he deserve i mean shit he put himself as of lesser value so he could stay with us- he said he'd rather pitch in the sox bullpen than be a starter for the reds. i think that he was very valuable to the team on more than a statistical level- which is the important part but shit- arroyo HAS an arm- he can pitch! ugh anyway i just have a hard time losing players...

Arroyo was an average pitcher, they knew if they stuck him in the pen he was going to lose his trade value having a 5+ ERA in mop-up work in the pen. I thought it was a good move

I'm not sure though, I have a feeling Pena is going to be a wash, just because people say he'll be good doesnt make it true, he's gonna be like Mark Maguire except only hit like 30 homers, probably not worth it

sad to see bronson go, I liked him a lot. I hope pena fits in and contributes as much as he did, because if not, there will be even more outrage in RSN.

This sucks. Arroyo was good. Is good. And is still young for a pitcher, the BoSox definitely should have kept him. You should never say you are "blessed" with surplus pitching, pitchers get injured, and then you're fucked. Bad trade in my opinion. Yeah they save money, but whats a couple million on 120 or so.

They're not saving any money. This was not a deal about money. It was the fact that Arroyo is an average pitcher and will never be better than what he already has been. They had 7 starters, plus Lester on the herizon, Bronson was simply not needed. If they waited and put Arroyo in the pen they would not have a gotten a player with the caliber of Willy Mo
