DIGITAL VS. FILM

post your input on digital cameras and film cameras. what do you like and dislike about each and what do you use them each for.

FILM:
+ take pics fast
+ mad good quality
+ cheap for the body

- money to develop and buy film
- takes time to get film devoloped
- can see the pic immediatly after

I USE FILM CAMERAS FOR:
> stills
> portraits
> some action

DIGITAL:
+ can see the picture right after taken
+ no film or developing
+ can upload straight to computer easily

- EXPENSIVE
- delay on taking pics
- not as fun
- quality isnt as good

I USE DITITAL CAMERAS FOR:
> some action
> some stills
> some portraits

Film looks so good but digital you can see it as soon as you take it.. they both have thier pros and cons but I like film cause it's more hands on

Digital SLRs have pretty quick response. You really aren't comparing the same thing.

aight well then compare DSLR and SLR, thats basically what i was doing. is a d50 dslr

FILM:

they compaired a 1Ds or 1Ds MarkII and they found it to take a better quality than a professional grade 100iso film (i don't remeber the brand, but look it up in an older pop photo)

+ cheap for the body

with a DSLR pictures are taken just as fast as a SLR it's with compacts that you get a delay


- not as fun --

with a DSLR i find it more fun than it's SLR counterpart because i can go and shoot off with out worrying about waisting film and you still have all the same controll over your exsposure and f-stop as you do with your SLR

- quality isnt as good
you lose film grain but overall quality is so similar it's hard to distinguish film from digital


the only - i think you didn't mention is the croping factor of todays less than full size sensors. which is a negitive if you want to go wide, but if you're going for tele then it helps you out a ton. sure film has it's part in photography but there are so many new emerging aspects of digital such as the digital dark room especialy shooting with RAW, the pictures on my camera are never the final product, there is always some developing to do whether it is just adjusting the w/b, or totaly changing the picture into black and white or adding color.

i think the best advantage to digital is that you can go out, fill up your memory card and then go back out and do it all over again. no being stuck to rolls of film. With that advantage one can take more pictures, faster, getting more exsperiance with their camera and overall improving their photography. Just my two cents

I still use film simply because I know it best, and like all the options avaliable with film. Also digital still cannot compete with a high quality b&w film, but on color there is very little difference. I think film is more fun to use, but digital is great for just shooting away.
