actually you can, one man wrote a 4 minute song entitled "Cocaine", the other man wrote an nearly hour long testament to human emotion and the beauty of music, and it is the anthem of the European Union, seems like one man had a little more upstairs than the other.
Another thing, today's society wouldn't listen to an hour long hit. I'm sure Clapton could easily have written an hour long segment of all his thoughts and emotions, but who would have cared about it.
in the progression of what makes music music, people will mention a few of innovators that usually reads like this:
bach, mozart, beethoven. maybe chopin and liszt, but not as much as the first three. they are the reason that western music is what it is. you cant say that about clapton.
it would be a task for anyone to come up with anything comperable to beethovens 9th.
