Closest to beach and surf but still close to skiing.

I bet it's been asked before but I can't find it/searched....

Wheres the ideal location to be near/on the beach but still a short drive to the mountain....which beach/costal areas are the shortest drive time to the mountain basically? I'm thinkin mainly CA, but which areas?

Thanks....I kind of left out that I wanted details too....such as what mountain and how long of a drive/how close to the beach also...

if you want to live near the beach in california the skiing is going to suck... it's going be a long drive in traffic to get to the mountains and when you get there it'll be super crowded.

maine has good surfing and a couple quasi-decent ski areas.

columbia river gorge is dope if you can windsurf. lots of kayaking and skiing around there. beaches not too far away. good cheese at tillamook.

ok maine would not really work unless you mean you want to just ski in the winter and then be at the ocean in the summer. i think your best bet would be cali if your looking at the states

If you live in san francisco, you're a short drive from some surfing and a 3-4 hour drive from tahoe. I'm not sure how the surfing compares to other parts of the world cuz i dont surf but the skiing is pretty spectacular.

NZ. most places you ski at are within 1/2 a day to a day to some decent surf. in the north island you can drive from mt. ruapehu (which can be a sick mountian when it is good) to raglan (which has EPIC surf) in under 2 1/2 hours.

Nor Cal without a doubt...maybe Oregon as well.

San Fran - Ocean Beach and the open coast north of Santa Cruz is one of the most consistent winter breaks in the world...between Oct and January, I surfed 40+ days and my brother who lives in Davenport (north of Santa Cruz) has surferd over a hundred days this winter. We had a stretch of 8-foot ++ surf for four weeks strgt in December. That is nearly double-overhead for you east coast wankers.

It is a 3-hour drive from the Bay to Truckee (depending on traffic)...my brother drove up Tuesday night - skied three feet of fresh at Alpine yesterday and drove home last night...

The gnarly thing about Nor-cal is the symbiotic relationship between the storms that bring us waves and snow. Ski fresh powder during the storm cycle and then head to the coast for super cleanlong period storm swells with offshore winds...

sucks that we have to wear wet-suits and the landlord (old whitey shark) evicts a few tenants every season

im a skier and surfer from protland, oregon. its 2 hours to the coast and 1 1/2 hours to hood. the mountain is great but the surf is inconsistent. its all beachbreaks with one pointbreak in seaside. the surf is real gnar in the winter and smaller and cleaner in the summer. i do most of my surfing in the summer.

or anyplace in east L.A. county would also be good for Big Bear or Mt.High.

Santa Cruz is on the beach, but is like 4 hours from the mountains. Best bet would be So Cal.

There is no good surf in the south of france only in the west and that is still 4-5 hours drive

Alpes du Haute Provence in France.
From Isola 2000 you can SEE the cöte azur.
And even in the summer you can ride in Les Deux Alpes.

Between Biaritz and the pyrenees shouldn't be too shabby either.

there is NO surf in s. france.

in the sw, hossegor/biarritz is an excellent break, and some pyrennees resorts are ok, pas de la casa prob the best.

in usa, i would think tahoe or mammoth would be best options.

If you want an actual beach rather than a quiet one then hit up stinson or the main beach In SF , i dont remember what its named. IF you want a quiet beach get anything around stinson beach or dillons a little farther north, there all shit fuck cold. id say 3.5 hours from tahoe.

wow... you guys have it all wrong! Here's the scoop on the hot spot:
FRESNO = 2 hours to any beach in Cal
FRESNO = 1 hour to local resort(Sierra Summit which isn't bad at all)
FRESNO = 4 hours to Tahoe; 5 hours to Mammoth

Central Valley represent!!

Wilmington Delaware..... IMO

8 ski areas within 2 hours
100 miles of coast within 90 minutes

Plus 4 mega large metropolitan areas, all included with gangster ghettos within 2 hours and lest I forget, Amish Country within 30 minutes. wooo hooo!

well i doubt you want east coast skiing, but i live on long island and it's about a ten minute ride to beaches (jones, tobay, gilgo...) and about 2 hours to some upstate mountains, and about 4 or 5 hours to some vermont places. it's pretty nice that i get to do like everything, but unfortunately the surf days outnumber the ski days by about 150 to 1

east coast is ok if you want east coast mountains. where i live in mass im 15 min from the beach, 1.5 hours from mountains.... so like some places in nh are the half way point, and hour skiing an hour to the beach

oregon....most big cities along I-5 and you would be set. Eugene is 2.5 hours from Bachelor, and only an hour to the coast but depending on where you want to go you might want to add sometime to that.

I went to Santa Barbara for school. My last two years I took winters off and lived in Tahoe, but the first 3 I managed to get 30+ days a year, mostly at Mammoth. Santa Barbara had a ski team thing where you could pay about 200 at the begining of the year and have a cabin to crash at all winter. Some weekends there might be 25 people there, but it was still a great deal. I always bought the early bird Mammoth season pass, so I got to ski for not too much money. In the winter I would take tues-thurs classes, and usually get at least 3 3-4 day ski weekends a month. I had afew other buddies who were on the same program, so that divided driving duties. It was ALOT of driving, 5-6 hours each way, but it was worth it. If you are looking for a place within an hour or two of GOOD skiing and with surf that will be hard to find. Maybe Oregon? I had a great time. It is not the same as skiing everyday, but you can ski mammoth 30+ days a year if you buy an MVP pass and find a good network. I have moved out of Tahoe, and now live back down in Newport Beach, going to UCI for grad school. This winter I had tues-thurs classes, and I have 30-35 days so far, with at least 8-10 more to come. It is not as great as skiing 100 days a year, and I wish it was not a 5-6 hour drive, but I have managed to have a fun season while living in socal. I should add that my grad program consists of lots of computer work, which I can do on a laptop from anywhere. If I had to be on campus more often I would not have gotten as many days. If only mt. baldy got consistent snow so I could get a day or two a weekend at a mountain with good steeps on the weekends I am not at Mammoth....

well ski_punx is the ultimate authority on this matter... but apparently on a clear day you can see the pacific ocean from mount baldy in la. mount baldys tight and i dont surf but the beach is less than an hour away without traffic

This is all true, but after finding a house, moving in and evaluating the best surf and ski spots around, its going to hit you.... you live in fresno.

LA area cannot be beat, some of the best surfing in hte world, great weather, so much going on everywhere around you and the drive to Mammoth is bearable... and bear mountain is getting ridiculous.. peep any of hte videos at bearmtn.com and you will see. also 300 dollar midweek passes
