Homemade Box Question

Ok ive read millions of threads about homemade boxes... but i never heard anything about using fiberglass instead of HDPE or lexan and so on.

Do you think you could just Poor Fiber glass resin on the top of the box??? i think it would cheaper too than buying the sheets of plastic and cutting them all to shape and blah blah blah. Im just not sure if it would slide, or if it would ruin my skis or something. I dont think it would tho.


Anyone tried this???

Also, how is that acrylic crystalite stuff? does it crack easy??? i saw some of it in Home depot and it was alot cheaper than lexan and lucite.

fiberglass probably wouldnt work that well. it might shred and it probably wouldnt slide very well. lexan or something thatrs called like "ultra high molecular density polyeurothane"

if u flip old straight skis over drill too wood and use the bases side by side they slide hella fast. just put wood under so they dont flex.make shure the edges on the outside are dull too. ...make a frame and then place skis on top.

also cut the tips off to make it good

i made a box with my friend and we used acrylite and it's way better then all your plastic stuff! and you can buy it already in a shape you whant!

Plus fiber glass is a bitch, you gotta do all sorts of shit to make that shit flush. I used plexy glass and it slides like butter. Plus my box is wide, so that was a must. Just buy one of those cone drill bits and drop the screws down below the plastic. Dont try to use liquid nails, shit sucks... the pilot holes and screws are the way to go. If you look at ne real boxes they screw em the fuck in.

im gonna make one this weekend. sounds really easy. wait, can you get plexiglass in long pieces? like around 10 feet? how much $? probably super easy to build it. and i'll put plywood on the sides and paint it and shit. make it look dope.

it was a good try, but its ultra high molecular weight(or density) polyethelyne.

My friends and i have built a pretty sweet box, and what it comes down to is just spend the money on some lexan or UHMW. We tried a couple different topsheets, and 80 dollars later we realized only the expensive stuff is durable enough and slides well enough. So my suggestion is to just buy a huge sheet of UHMW, thats what we did, we made a pretty big box and still have enough left over to make at least 1 more. It cost like 130$ for a 4 foot by 10 foot sheet.

for my box which was a 5 foot flat, 8 down and like 1'8" wide it cost me like 120 plus a shit load for the wood which i got pressure treated.

if your school has whiteboards instead of chalkboards, ask a custodian if they have extra or some they're gonna throw out. i got a piece like 6 feet long and three feet high...for free. i still have yet to do anything with it, but i assume it should work well.

its a kind of hard plastic that is really slipery and white.u can buy that kinda stuff in almost all building store.maybe "acrylite" isnt the word used in english..sorry for that.but an other trick...put aliminium bands on each sides of ur box or the material will chip.

i made a six inch fiberglass box a couple years ago. it slid really well, but after a few days, it started to chip and crack. And once the cracking started, the fiberglass basiclly shattered within a few hits. It was really fun for a few days, but not worth the work for such a short amount of time.

buy a bucnh of 1/2 inch pvc and put them in strips across the box. I did it this winter and it slides so smooth and lasts forever

if you're gunna make a box make it really skinny so it basically is a rail. Thats what i did, i think mines like 6 inches across with the coping, maybe less.

what do u guys think about just using 4 or 5 pvc pipes side by side instead of plexiglass or fiberglass because they cost more than they're worth

HDPE(high density poly ethylene) works really well.  It's what I have.  I got a huge 4x8 sheet for $50 from a plastics store.

def use the yellow pages to find plastics stores.  I spent a lot of time going to home depot trying to find lexan but all they have is 3/32nds and that's too thin and will break.  I looked around with some plastics stores and one had a sheet of hdpe they didn't need so they cut me a huge deal.  Many plastics stores also have scraps and stuff you can get for free.


Most sheets of plastic come in 4x8 and stores usually only sell it whole. 

Accryllic fiberglass won't work.  However i've heard non-accryllic does.

If you want something that will last, go with HDPE, lexan, or puckboard.

If you don't have much money, pvc is a great cheap alternative.  If anyone says it sucks and it breaks, they are right about the 2nd part, but it took me 2 years of hard abuse to crack my pvc on my rail, and it was really easy to replace. 

Also, liquid nails will work for pvc, but not for hdpe and lexan.  Go to home depot and get a special drill bit that in the predrill gives space for the top of the screw, I can't remember what its called.  You have to counter sink them.
