Why wouldnt you get twin-tips?

im not gunna get the best answers being that most everyone on this site has twins. But from a buyers point of view, (if youre not looking for a race ski) why would you no get a twin tip. They are not any more expensive than other all mountain skis, if not cheaper. They are constructed to be beat up and are therefore more durable. They give you the ability to ski switch and go into the park if youd want to, but still ski great outside the park. LAstly they usually look way better than non twins. So my question is, from a marketing and consumer point of view, why are non twintiped recreational skis even still made?

if you dont have a desire to ski backwards then there is no reason for you to get twins...

BC touring? extra weight. It's a little one, and my AT set up now and likely my next will have at least a raised tail (I like it for billy-goating, and will admit they look cooler). But for hard core BC skiers lugging that extra weight up the hill is pointless.

radius is too big. id rather ski something with a 12 or 15 m radius and little twin tip than a 20 or 25 m radius and be able to ski backwards.

12-15m will definitely be a ski designed for carving on groomers, something like that will not be suitable for going off-piste at a fast rate of speed, or going straight for that matter. For me, the bigger the turn radius, the better.

i think the most legitamite posts o here are the ones about the effective edge and stuff. My original point was saying that companies could turn up the backs of any recreational ski and they would be capable of riding switch. And for those of you saying twins are too soft, im saying thqa companies could make stiffer ones that would rip all mountain but would be capable in the park, such as the prophet 80s or any similar ski.

for the powder: If twins were bad, then why are ski companies making them for powder such as the elizabeths, the gun, etc. My chronic wides are amazing in powder. Maybe not AK pow, but still sweet and floating. Its only the park skis like the fujatives and the invaders that suck in powder cuz theyre either not wide enough or they arent strong enough for it.

I think someday almost all skis will be twintipped because there really is no reason they shouldnt be. Although right now there just isnt that much selection in twintips as there is outside of it and lots of ski shops don't even have twins in the store so people dont even see them

Twins arn't bad for powder, in fact most soft skis are good for making warren miller turns down a 25 degree slope. Most twins = soft, and most soft skis are not stable on ungroomed snow at high rates of speed, they just get squirrely and you don't have as much control over them. Also Sidecut+powder=eats my ass. Way too hooky, my skis have a turn radius of 38.3M, I've come to the conclusion that sidecut kind of sucks for off-piste ripping.

There is no way that twins ride same out of park as race / recreationals do. I have a pair of Crossmax 10s (The 2001s possibly 2's I think). Making nice carving turns on them is absolutely effortless.
I got a pair of twin tips this season, and carving became an entire workout. The bend on the skies makes them rattle on high speeds, and hold poorly on ice, compared to the very little flexibility on the crossmax's.
There's definetly a huge difference on the ski style. For the record both sets of skies set me back the same ammount, and the off-park riding is dramaticly different, and very noticeable.

Yeah, sure the ski looks "way cooler" to us, but would they necessarily if you are in your 40s? Do you want a ski with graffiti graphics? And there are plenty of great all mountain skis that are not twins still...the twin tip, despite its popularity, still does not attract every crowd.

Man I used to love the crossmax p'10's I actualy learned how to ski park on those beleive it or not, those thing could edge back and forth so damn fast, but I broke 3 pairs of them in one season and I still have a pair in the corner of my room that I split in half. The tips are way to soft for jumping, everytime I would land it would slap the tips and eventually they would fly apart

yeah sidecut does suck on powder but if you're a good skier you can handle twins on anything including groomed. I ski 60 mph (yes, I had someone clock me) down groomed stuff on mine and they are good. Sure, they can chatter, but if you can turn well then the chattering goes away.

I wouldnt get twin tips.... Because if you have twin tips that means you have "shaped" skis and I prefer my Sticks straight

Meh. i have K2 Seth Pistols and they hold up fine at very high speeds and they carve well too. they just have a little bigger turning radius...

How big are you? Groomed or off-piste? Pistols are ok but they are too soft for serioulsy charging variable terrain in my opinion

Once you've ridden Supermojos everything else seems inferior.

Heh, this man knows what he's talking about. I seriously don't think I can ski another ski ever again. I talked to the rep the other day trying to stock up on a few pairs so I could be on them for the next few years but they are out. Pisser....

Just stock up next year. They're supposed to fix the delamming problem on next year's model, so then they'll go from being an amazing ski to the BEST SKI EVER.

I might pick up some mojo90's for park, are you liking yours? Head just sent me some iGS worldcup RD racestock skis in a 190cm FIS legal w/ freeflex 17 bindings and all that shit for bombing groomers this spring, thats gonna be fun. I might sell them to buy a helmet cam though I'm not sure

They're awesome, I actually have them as my everyday ski right now. For park they'd be relatively stiff, but coming off of the Supermojos I'm sure they would be no problem at all.

Sweet, yeah soft skis don't really do it for me anymore. They are just scary to ski fast on, plus you can't hook up an edge for shit

One thing that people on this site may overlook is that only about 10% of total ski sales are twins, if that. It's kinda wierd to think about, but true. From a average consumers aspect, twins are faily new and people are scared of that. They haven't skied on a twin and don't know the benefits i.e. tail releases easier making it easier to ski, being able to slide backwards easier in chutes, and landing switch (which the average ski typically doesn't do). If you're a big mountain skier, some people like having what they call the "third edge". The squared tail acts like a hold when landing in the back seat and holds the ski in the turn during hard turns.
It takes a lot to convince someone to change what they know. We're working on it everday. I got my 61 year old uncle out on a pair of Prophet 90's the other day and he wants a pair. It takes getting people out there demoing them to show them what's up.

personally, i think supermojos(193cm) are the worst resort ski in the world.
heli skiing, then they'd be the greatest ski in the world...

Seriously, people that isnt skiing in the park doesnt need full twintiped skis, the big downside are the often soft flex that gives them bad edge grip on ice and the long turning radius that makes the twins pretty boring for medium to slow cruizing on groomers.
And i mean most of the "normal" people on the hill doesnt ride that fast.
But then again for example someone that wants to get better when skiing offpist skis like the Seth Vicious are more optimal because they are more forgivin then the legend pro riders with the same waist width.
But if you take a look at like all the All mountain skis they have a semi twin-tip.
And i must say that there are a few twins that hold up against all mountain skis like the Scott P3, Völkl Karma, Big trouble, Scratch BC Etc.
For exampel my Scratch BC`s (05-06) are much more stabil and have a greater edge hold then my nothing but troubles that are 2cm thinner under foot (and many cheaper all-mountain carvers and all-mountain freeride skis).
But the downside with them are the really long turning radius that many of the wider skis have, they get boring if you wanna carve som shorter turns on groomers, but thats not my style of riding anyways.
Many of the wider Twins are really good over the whole mountain, just as legends, Monsters, Bandits are.

bump.
Lots of freeride skis are partial twin now. Having the twin tip sacrifices the ability to go forwards to some extent, because the tips need to float behind the tails when switch

i have had candide 3.0 and prodigy 3.0 and both were great on the whole mountain as they are a fun freeride ski but in ice or any sort of challenging conditions i would much rather have a non twin ski that could actually grip and ski well

Very interesting insight from people 14 years ago.
The sole purpose of a twin tip is for skiing switch. I've seen people rip park on directional skis. It's all about personal preference.
