i hated the commercial for it, the one where they say the intel chip has been performing stupid tasks inside a dull little box, but now itll live life in a mac
what was the point of that commercial, there are 100 better ways to say that mac will be using intel chips without insulting PCs
It basically means that apple computers will be probably taking a big step backwards for at least the first couple of years. So buy now, or wait for them to get better again.
yep, the apple processors were the shit and the only way to get them was to buy an apple computer but now its the same shit with a different os, which still kicks ass but apple took a big step backwards with this one
I don't know why you guys are saying it is a big step backwards. One of the main reasons they switched is because Apple couldn't get a fast enough PowerPC mobile processor for their laptops. Intel can provide a high volume of fast mobile chips. ie The dual core chip in the Mac Book Pro. The PowerPC chips may still have an advantage in the high end desktop/workstation (G5) but those are the last ones apple is gonna switch over.
Well, seeing as though all of the adobe applications and final cut, and various music editing programs were made on macs, Graphic design, and video and music editing.
Trust me, Macs run a lot better with a lot of programs. It's amazing when you have a really good PC and a really good mac, and compare the two.
I don't know my opinion on the whole debate.
However, contrary to some people's belief, Intel chips will not make macs and PCs the same. They still run differently, and I think that mac is still UNIX.
A macbook pro spanks a powerbook G4, so long as you're comparing apples to apples (haha) IE universal binary software. A macbook pro/intel iMac will suck it up if it's running a piece of PPC software in virtualization mode VS a PPC computer (PB G4, iBook G4, iMAc G4, PowerMac) running PPC software natively.
Basically, they're faster. Much faster. For the most part. They certainly haven't gotten worse.
as far as i can see the problem for the next few years is gonna be software. rosetta sucks up alot of the speed of PPC coded software running on an intel machine.
as all the hi-end software is designed for the hi-end macs i don't think companies will be too keep to get intel based software out there because big companies aren't gonna want to get rid of their dual g5 machines in a hurry. it's just a slight problem. it'll get ironed out thogh. i guess when everyone has changed.
i'd be really interested in a dual boot machine. if i could have OSX, linux and windows on one box that'd be pretty sweet. for most users that's not really of interest though.
for now i think it's a good thing. it means when vista is sold with the same processors we can laugh a bit more when everyone still gets viruses. my g4 machine will be sticking around for plenty of time yet i hope.
