Correct me if I'm wrong here...
Soft boots(and by that I mean softer flexing plastic shell boots, like the 1080) are great. They're more comfortable then boots from 4-5 years ago, and they still perform very very well, particularly if you ride a lot of pipe/park. They also work well in pow, off cliffs, etc. Soft boots, like the Rossi soft, aren't quite at the same level of performance yet, in my opinion, and according to what I've heard. They aren't quite stiff enough in forward flex or laterally to power today's skis.
Also, doesn't a softer boot work better with shaped skis for most skiers?
Finally, I ride rossi freeride xx boots from 2-3 years ago(The first year they made them) and I've had plastic cut out of them to make them have a softer forward flex. They work really well. Take the time to go to see a GOOD bootfitter in your area, try on LOTS of boots, find the shell that matches your foot the best, and then ride those. Have any alterations you need done(like blowing out the shell in the toe/side, etc) by the same person, and make sure to get footbeds. Then you should be set for approx. 200 skier days, before the plastic breaks down from wear, tear, impact, and UV rays(I read that in some ski magazine, might not be true.) Good luck finding the boots you need.
