When I'm in the little park just using the rope tow I like just ditching them off to the side and just cruising up and down. I don't think they really help unless I'm doing bigger things, and I use them when I'm riding but in a little park doing little things I could care less if I'm holding poles or not.
yeah i'd hate to not have poles on the flats, but it'd be nice for hiking (my skis don't attatch to my bag so it's skis over one shoulder and both poles in the other hand).
lol.. seriously, I can't ski without them. Maybe because I am used to using them to ski better, like poleplant and shit. In the park I don't poleplant of course, but I just can't ski without them. Its almost like a mental thing.
i don't think having poles matters i prefer not having poles it makes everything funner i think like it's just one less thing to worry about and w/o you can grab your skis so much better with your whole hand and stuff when ever i fall with poles i always hurt my hands cuz i forget to move them from my sides too so i have to just drop them
its all about finding new ways to hold you skis, i found a really relaxing way was taking off you skis then "hooking" or "resting" the heel pieces on my shoulders, keep your straps on your hands so you dont have to carry your poles, and then put your hands on your head with the skis looped under them and then put your fingers in your goggle strap and your set to go
i fucked my shoulder up bad today and i tried skiing high baldy without using my poles...and it didn't work out very well. in the park, i don't use them if i'm doing the photog thing...and i'll hit boxes and stuff on the way down...but it feels so awkward and snowbladerish...even on water ramps. that's just me though--i'm not hating.
lmao "who thinks poles matter"
thats good hopefully you are kidding because poles are made for pole-planting which, if you could ski would know what it was but since you have short poles that probably dont touch the ground and their for dont pole plant than ditch them and become a snopwblader or airealist
My poles are 100 and 105 cm. They really do nothing for me except get in the way, it doesn't really matter one way or the other to me. Just ski how you want to ski.
When i dont have them i feel like i gotta stick my arms out to keep my balance! i only ditch em when i gotta film. But yay there great for scaring the boards who think it is kool to jump on you tails in the lift line!
Poles serve no purpose if all you do is ride park, but if you actually ski; BC, big mountain, moguls, etc, then you need poles. I really don't care if I see somebody skiing without poles, it doesn't affect me whatsoever and it's their choice if they want to use them.
Since im in the midewest and im a park rat i use 32" jr. poles. I know some guys who ride poleless. i don't think it matters but personally i think it looks goofy. i don't hink it matters but its harder to get speed if you can't poll plant. (Atleast it feels that way) thats all i got. the only thing i say is out west (Out of the park) They do matter. otherwise do what you want.
doesnt make a difference for me
if more people start skiing without poles though... are we going to see more wrist and hand injuries? When I fall I usually dont try to catch myself... you would be more in a position to naturally put your arms out and then probably hurt them
they don't really matter if you're just going to be sessioning a rail or jump, but i feel naked without them. plus, i'm not a park rat, and rip the rest of the mountain so yeah..
no poles can be made to look stylish, so i'm not going to say either it's gay, or super rad, but i personally can't ski without poles.
Skiing legit stuff and outside of the park poles are necessary for me...but a day of sesh'ing park and jibbing groomers/flats, no poles can be OUTRAGEOUSLY fun. No poles is fun.
back in the day with straight skis poles were necessary but with parabolic skis you dont have to plant a pole to start a turn. I am true to using poles 100% of the time, but really when it comes to park and groomers you dont need em at all. crud and pow its a different story though.
I was raised to ski with poles, so I use basic racing techniques with poles. I like having them. Skiing with no poles is awsome too, cause 5 finger grabs are the ####. Its way harder to make stuff looks good with no poles though, cause my arms flail. Some people are really good at it, like Mr. Mahre.
ya know what would piss me off? if a no poler got into the back 9.....that would suck soooooo bad, cuz you CANNOT ski pow or steeps or moguls or crud without them.... oh wait....
poles help you learn how to balance..blahblahblah..i make thia arguement in every one of these fuckign threads...learning to ski w/o poles helps your fundamentals, then by adding poles on later, you're that much better of a skier.
theres definately somethign wrong with needing poles to ski (no offense you suck), you should be able to initiate a turn without poles, it sharder but once you learn, you also learn how to initaite a turn w/o your arms, hence you are a better skiier
