i have been going to local peace rallies when i can, and i really am getting a lot out of it. there is a group of vietnam/korea vets that i hang out with afterwords sometimes, they are all really nice guys.

in my opinion, rallying against war certainly has an effect on the people in favour of war. if they went out, and didn't see any opposition to their views, they wouldn't think twice. at least with the rallies, the opposing voices are heard. and contrary to what was stated previously, i believe that the anti-vietnam rallies helped end that horrible conflict.

i'll bring the cans of tear gas...who wants to help me throw them?

Last time I checked, protesting was only illegal in countries that didn't respect human rights like freedom of expression. Anyone here not like being able to say what you have to say, when you want to say it, to whomever will listen? Yeah, most protests end up being useless, but think of it this way: We elect governments to serve US, the people. If they step out of line, stop serving the people and instead go after their own interests, the people have to remind them of who they work for. That's what it seems a protest does, at least for me. I know it's been said before by many, many people, but in times like these, protesting might be the best/most 'patriotic' thing you can do.

thers nothing wrong with protestors, some of them are idiots. I was going to go to a rally in NYC but the protestors didnt get the marching permit so it would of been alot of angry people standing around in the cold, some people go to learn ins and disscution groups, being an activist is a full time job ( not saying I am one) but some people go out and throw rocks at buildings and some make a difference, you can make a difference or add to the problem

Tim: I wasn't too clear with my first post, and I wrote that in a bad way. I meant that the government wasn't quick to respond to the protests, ie. they didn't stop the war right then becuase of them.

yeah protestors have always been a problem to the goverment, they never know immediatly how to deal with them, they give reasons like 'without war you wouldent even have the right to protest' but good protestors arent going against the goverment just the issues

My friend goes to NYU and her hippy ass went to the war protest in Time Square this weekend, and my other friend was in town visiting her and they ended up causing a riot. How stupid... protests of non violence start a riot.

Our Prime Minister has already said that he is taking no notice of protests of opinion poles. He has also said that he hates war- so I don't understand why he isn't listening to what his fellow citizens want. He's being quite selfish and isn't interested in how the war will effect everyone else. What are your leaders saying?

I'm heavily involved in the peace movement in my area, and I can tell you that 'protests' will make a difference, and have already. You'll notice that this is one of the largest peace movements in the history of this country, and it's the only one that is in place BEFORE a war has actually started.

The reason I put the word protest into quotations is because the vibe we're trying to put out is not so much anti-war, per say, but pro-peace. We're not protesting war, we're supporting peace. If U.S. soldiers go into Iraq, we'll support them and pray for them, because it's the right thing to do. We aren't going against our soldiers, or our government, or our country- every 'protestor' out on the street is a patriot, trying to get down what they believe is best for the country. And that just so happens to be peace.

People need to realize that this war is nothing more than a front to blind us from the slow takeover of our civil rights in this country. Have you heard about the Patriot Act? They're trying to pass another one, the Patriot Act II. Research it. Find out about it. And find out if you still want to live here afterwards. 1984 anyone?

Usually Kami and I aren't on the same side, but he is right about the patriot act... I suppose this war is somewhat a front. I still believe even if they weren't trying to get the act through we'd be going to war. I think it's happening to be convenient though. Orwell is the man by the way.

Kami, you said it perfectly. Protesting and demonstrating is by far the biggest form of patriotism there is.

It sickened me how after September 11th, every single person started calling themselves a patriot because they went and slapped a flag on their car, or an america bumper sticker on their car, or wore an america shirt.

Protesting/demonstrating is the utmost patriotic thing that you can do. One thing that sickened me was after 9/11 every ignorant person in this country considered them a patriot because they had an american flag on their car, or wore an american shirt. Even those who didn't vote in elections did this. It's disgusting.

Protesting/demonstrating is the essence of patriotism. You care about what happens, and you go out, and try to make your views known, and you try to make a difference in it all.

have any of you heard of the 'domestic security enhancement act'? I'm not sure if this is what Kamikaze was refering to, but I'm going to copy an article i found about it in this post.

Even after the draconian measures of the 'Patriot' Act, George W. Bush and company apparently think Americans are too free and that we cannot be trusted to know what further infringements on our freedom are being planned.

The Justice Department's plans for a 'Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003' were revealed only through a leak to the Center for Public Integrity, which made the document public on February 7. Dick Cheney and House Speaker Dennis Hastert are the only recognizable elected or quasi-elected officials documented as having obtained the document, which is marked 'Confidential: Not for Distribution Draft Jan. 9, 2003.'

You can read our summary below or our latest op-ed, published February 11 by Pacific News Service. The full draft legislation may be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Consequences of the proposals in the draft DSEA
If introduced and passed as drafted, the Act would:

Revoke portions of the Freedom of Information Act. (See Section 201, pp. 13-14 of pdf) Your right to obtain information about a friend or family member detained by the government in connection with any activity deemed 'terrorist' would be revoked. This is incredible in lieu of the fact that the Freedom of Information Act already allows for the government to withhold such information if its disclosure could hamper investigation of other suspects or events (exemptions 7a, 7c, 7f, in 5 U.S.C. 552b7).

The Act also would prevent you from having reasonable access to information about threats to your health and community, such as levels of toxic emissions (Section 202). The Act refers to such information as “a roadmap for terrorists.” The result: you'll have to trust the Bush Environmental Protection Agency to disclose any corporate activities that pose a threat to you and your family.

Allow the Bush Administration to revoke your residency or U.S. citizenship. Perhaps the most alarming proposal (Section 501) would give the Justice Dept. power to revoke a person's permanent resident alien status or even U.S. citizenship for participating in, or 'providing material support to ... a terrorist organization.'

Since the 2001 'Patriot Act' redefined 'terrorist activity' so broadly that minor vandalism could qualify, donating to a nonprofit organization that, unknown to you, is on Ashcroft's disfavored list could end your life as an American citizen and resident.

Invalidate state legal consent decrees (Section 312) that seek to curb police spying on U.S. citizens, regardless of any tangible evidence of criminal activity. This effectively re-authorizes the CIA and FBI to engage in domestic terrorism against activist groups ( a la COINTELPRO); practices that were made illegal after the well-documented abuses of the 1960s.

If you think we overstate by using the term domestic terrorism to describe the FBI and CIA activities, please inform yourself about this critical history. The Church Committee report (officially the Final Report of the Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities of the United States Senate, 94th Congress, 2nd Session, 1976) is a good starting point. Allow the government to force U.S. citizens to allow invasive collection of DNA samples (Sections 301-306) if the Administration consider someone a 'suspected terrorist.'

These are just initial observations; it will take some time to fully understand the consequences of these proposals. The Act also would authorize the Justice Department to conduct secret searches of the home of any suspected terrorist for 15 days after any 'national emergency,' rather than after a formal declaration of war, as in current law. Wiretaps of U.S. citizens for longer periods and with less court oversight are another proposal.

When confronted with the leaked legislation draft, Justice Department spokesperson Barbara Comstock claimed that the document represented merely 'staff discussions.' You can see the draft legislation (120pp-requires the free Acrobat Reader program) yourself and decide if such claims by Bush Administration officials are credible. We urge you to at least scan the 'Security Enhancement Act' for yourself, especially if you think we exaggerate the threats to our freedom. Even a casual read should quickly dispel that idea. Then please join us in working to preserve our Constitutional rights.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again:
You can't really criticize someone if your spelling is atrocious. It can make it quite hard to understand what you're trying to say, not to mention that you end up looking like an uneducated fool.

CTtripper and some others brought up some very interesting and disturbing news/points, and I'm glad I did some research. I'm also glad I'm not American(not that they're bad people, but their government seems to be making MANY bad decisions and doesn't seem to care about what the PEOPLE want), but I'm not so shortsighted as to believe that what goes on in the US doesn't affect the rest of the world, and particularly Canada, as we share the longest 'undefended' border in the world, not to mention trade and many other such things. I'm going to the next Vancouver peace protest I hear of, just to remind the world's governments who they work for.(In case you're not sure, they work for US, the people who live under their rule).
