ok, so i'm very bored so I thought i'd come up with the most badass, hardcore, never-mind-the-bollocks big mountian setup. needless to say, picking the ski was hardest. no doubt you'll all disagree. i dont care about poles or gloves, so i didn't include them.

a please - vertical feet isnt the only factor when considering big mountains.

I dont remember lecturing you on what constitutes a big mountain - only that your ski choice, salomon, is inferior to other options out there.

So, Pip, tell me about big mountain skiing? I want to hear about the vast knowledge you have that I don't.

Lets talk avalanche danger, interpretation, rescue, route finding, skis, gear, whatever.

If your so informed, how about you enlighten me? Tell me something I dont know. Outsmart me. Do SOMETHING besides whine and accuse me of getting shit from rich family and skiing my pitiful little mountain.

how would you explain a 5 ski quiver all of which are $$$ when you are still studying? i didn't assume, i merely asked the question.

i'm not saying i'm better than you, i'm probs not, i just take issue that you stereotyped me, knowing absolutely fuck-all about me.

my point about movement or zag has had no response, so i'll assume, (yeah, this is an assumption), that you have no counterargument there.

would you care to enlighten me what else determines how big a mountain is other than it's size?

Explain the 5 ski quiver: They all get used, albeit not everyday, but that's the point of a quiver, right?

Response to your point about Zag or Movement: Although they may have broken out into the mainstream moreso than Iggy/Cap/DP, they still aren't widespread. Also, it's impossible for us to know why a company stays small or goes large-scale without knowing any behind-the-scenes info. They may choose to stay small, they may lack funding, one may use much more expensive materials than another hindering their growth, etc. Thus, I don't think this is a question we have the info to answer appropriately.

I agree that a big mountain ski should not be judged solely on it's size. For instance, I skied 10+ inches of heavy, windbuffed pow yesterday. In the morning, I took out my FFF, which don't perform well in this type of snow because the big platform can get pulled and pushed every which way. I went back to the car and got me m103, which don't have the same floatation ability, but cut through the snow better. This is precisely the reason for a quiver as I wish I had a pair of DP 120, 138 or Spats for the conditions yesterday.

However, I will say that I think stability is one of the biggest factors in choosing a big mtn ski. The AK is definitely not on the stiff side, but if it works for you, sweet. Guys like Hugo, Treadway, etc ski skis that are stiffer than 99% of skiers can handle because they need the stability.

thats a viewpoint i respect. my point about his quiver wasn't why he had it (fine) but how a student can afford over $3000 of skis?

i dunno about usa, but movement is fairly widespread in europe. still, both are far bigger than iggy etc, but still offer great specialist services.

i take your point about impossible to know details of companies and wholeheartedly agree with your points about skis.

i wish everyone here was able to offer calm, rational opinions like yourself.

I worked for a venture capital firm all summer. I worked the 4 summers before that doing trail work. Then I bought the skis I wanted.

Well...that sucks. Maybe you should try a pair of Capitals or Kingswood, which happen to be good in every condition.

If you want to get literal with it...then yes, the size of the mountain is what determines how big it is.

But just because something has only 2,600 vertical feet doesn't mean the terrain there is easier. There are glaciers that run 1000's of vertical feet and the skiing on them wouldn't be big mountain. There are spots where there is less than a 1,000 vertical feet and the terrain would be considered big mountain (Baker, Alpental, etc)

and spelling? Come on. I havent slept in two days and it hardly does anything for your point.

Most of the Salomon riders are on Gun Labs, not that it matters. Yeah AK Rockets are good but there are way better skis out there for big mountain as mentioned 100's of times: Dynastar Legend Pro/Legend Pro XXL (2007), Head Supermojo and the 105 next year, 4FRNT EHP 193, Armada ANT 191, various Capital/Iggy/DP's, Blizard TP.

All much more stable, as you said big mountain doesn't always mean bottomless pow. Would you rather hit a patch of boilerplate at 90 km/h on an AK Rocket with a swallowtail (e.g. POWDER ski) or a Legend Pro than can ride it out? What about getting stuck in an icy narrow chute and trying to back up, oops, swallowtail not going to be fun in that situation either. AK Rocket Lab is a good powder ski, it is not the best big mountain, not even close.

Just because you are mad you bought AK Rocket Labs instead of Legend Pros doesn't mean you have to claim them to be the best kid.

my (valid) point about movement adnd zag is that they have grown to be international brands whilst still remaining specialist freeride and retaining good service. seeing as your whole argument was that specialist freeride ski companies couldn't grow and remain "Soulful", i believe that point is very substantial indeed.

ok, i was being facaetious about spelling and big mtn stuff, i was in a silly mood. vicious may think i'm a tit, but at least he's intellectually mature enough to have a reasonable debate.

All 4 of those ski companies are international companies and have had good customer service (pending Dp...as their skis are just going out now).

All those companies will remain soulful even if they grow. Because the the niche they fill, though, their growth is limited. Igneous could never be a mega corporation like salomon. They quality of their product wouldn't be up to par.

and talking about maturity in a debate...

you said I was rich and spoiled and had to mention that you are going to oxford for english with a scholarship....

A few years ago Igneous was making a few hundred skis a year.

It took up too much of his time, so Adam decided to at first stop production, and then bring it back in a small amount.

adam has a very limited market niche. Not many people are able to pay $1000 per set of skis.

Saying the market for iggies is growing is incorrect. It is staying steady, right where it is, by choice of adam. He stopped it originally because he didnt want to be spending all his time building skis. Building the numbers that he is doing now he is able to still find time to do what he wants.

ok you're right. we've gone completely off the topic and argued about the specifics of ski companies, which i'm sure none of us originally intended. it isn't going anywhere and we are insulting each other for the sake of it.

i now know what skis your into: have a look at www.birdos.com and see what you think. my friend rides the puder luder and loves them. check out also the 11-should be similar to lotus 138.

pretty much right.

Birdos is dope. It is a bit expensive, though, even more so than other companies around.

But....

The Puder Luder has the best ski graphic of any ski ever made.

Vicious really wanted to pick up a pair...but they are pretty soft.

ya, probs too soft for huge lines, but superb for bc kickers coz they have huge tail. do you do much of that-looking at your quiver, only the vicious is twin if i remember.

i guy teles them at our resort. best tele skier iv seen in my life. that guy muscles that shit around.

but yea, to the other guy, you want a stiff ski for pure big moutain skiing, and if your only doing big mountain, you probably dont need a twin either. those get in the way sometimes. swallowtails are nice for pure pow because the tails dip therefor giving your tips more float. but yea, definitly want stiff skis.

i will explain what makes a mountain big mountain, I ski crystal too:
1. powder
2. steepness
3. cliffs
4. a large backcountry (we have two actually)
just because you dont have to heli ski to it doesnt mean its not big mountain.
