What are these Recco avalanche "beacons" in Boots and Outerwear and stuff

I don't understand how there could possibly be an electronic beacon inside that little piece of plastic on atomic boots and sessions outerwear and stuff. And yet they claim that this is a battery free avalanche beacon. How does this work? Do other trancievers just pick it up so they can find you even if you don't have a transeiver?

Think about it. You spend, oh, 20-40 bucks extra and get the piece of mind that pretty much every major resort in North America is using their system. So if you were to get buried, because I'm sure you are that crazy inbounds, they could find you.
