Edge bevel

Okay, so ive been riding my 4 frnt MSPs totally detuned for butters/rails etc, but im tired of sliding around on the ice non stop. I realized that i might achieve the best of both worlds by giving my base edge a higher degree bevel, in other words, the bottom part of my edge will be at a greater angle to my bases than normal (~1 degree). I feel as though this will allow me to butter and slide rails, but when i put them on enough of angle they will carve. Feedback?

i think youll still detune them on rails but tahts a good idea

What I do is a full bevel with detune right underfoot, it seems to work realy well and the only time i can't hold an edge is if i'm on solid ice for minutes at a time, in otherwords patches of ice don't give me any trouble.

You shouldn't detune your skis completely, keep everywhere but underfoot sharp.

a good idea would be to put a 1 degree base and 1 degree side bevel on your skis. keeping them at 90 degrees makes them stay sharp longer. the base bevel will make your skis catch less on cat tracks and straights, meaning when you are on flats they wont knock around side to side as much, and they will track straighter. also, they will carve noticeably better with an edge bevel as long as you know how to truly carve. they will hold a better grip on ice as well if you put a 1, 1 on them too.

just make sure that you dont go to a 1 degree side, and then bring it back to a 0 because that really takes off a lot of edge. you can only go higher with side bevels because otherwise it ruins your edges really fast. especially if you are doing rails this will take off a lot of edge and they will crack faster if you decide you dont like the bevel.

well, i tune my race skis with a 1 and 2 degree bevel. One degree on the bottom and two on the side.

i get mine tuned regualrly...whihc i think is 1 and 2...and then detune underfoot and works good for me

I've heard paople say that a 5 degree base bevel and 5 degree side bevel underfoot is good - this would give you a sharp but bevelled edge, so it makes sense. I wouldn't want to ski 5 degree base bevel on my whole ski though - a regular 1/1 or 1/2 outside the bindings would be good, but blending the two would be hard to get right. A shop would probably have to do this by hand which would cost you a lot. My shop even charges extra for specific angles on machine grinds. I'll ask the techs what they think about the idea tomorrow.

uh, i dont know about a 5 degree base edge. anything over like 2 degrees you really need to be layin the ski over to be able to use them. top level racers ski like 1 degree base and like 7 or so degree side. i think for park skis a 1, 1 would be good, but a 1, 2 or 1, 3 would be better for the average skier outside of the park.
