I wanted to see em a few weeks ago, but they played a day after my shoulder surgery. Bad combo. I was pretty bummed but hope to get to Bonnaroo to see them and many others this summer.
I think theyre kinda boring personally. Theyre sound is too staurated. Theres nothing like cutting edge or anything that stands out. Theyre just ok. I think there overrated.
i also agree that they are overrated. i've seen them a couple times and they are great at building up energy in the building, but they usually do nothing with it and let it go to waste.
but i just got out of railroad earth on saturday and i was blown away. they were one of my favorites before i saw them but afterwords i'm just speechless. i also got to meet tim carbone( the fidder player) whos one of my idols which was cool. we just hung out at the bar for like 20 minutes after the show, he's a real nice guy. also i met their opening act( the Hackensaw boys). they are amazing, truley a talented group of individuals. and on top of that they are some of the niceest musicians i've ever met. i'm on a first name basis with the percusionist(sp?), brian, and gave him my cell phone number and shit and he said he'd call whenever they were around the madison/milwaukee area. they are still on a spring tour and are doing a bunch of festivals this summer so i highly recomend you check these guys out.
they're alright, but there are so many other jam bands that are better. STI anyone, im also a fanof widespread, and who doesn't like the dead, they are the pinnacle of jam bands, though for some reason i dislike phish.
you obviously aren't listening to the correct songs then. Umphrey's play some of the most technical music of today. listen to NEMO off of the Bonnaroo cd and tell me that isn't cutting edge. hell, they are practically the dream theatre of Jam bands.
if we're talking about vocals, i have to say that the new MSG new years phish album when they do drowned (who cover), is probably the worst singing ever, but i still love phish
