Skiing with music ---> Dangerous?

I bought these earphones that fit nicely under the ear peices of my helmet.
I was going to bring them skiing yesterday, but when I told my parents I was going to ski with music, they cringed.
They were saying that the music distracts you and you need to hear whats going on around you to ski safely.
What do you think?

I pretty much can't ski without music anymore, its soooo much better. And I've never found it to present a safety problem, I just don't have it blasting, then I can still hear a little and talk to my friends and still hear my music.

I managed to fit earbuds in the earflap of my helmet so i can listen to music and still hear everything around me perfectly, as long as its not super loud its definatly safe

I can't ski without tunes anymore either, as previously mentioned just don't listen to it TOO loud and you're all gravy. Also if you ski faster than everyone else no one can sneak up on you and hit you.

I can't ski with music. I always feel like fiddling with the volume or changing the track every 2 seconds and I end up being distracted from skiing.

I ski with one earphone in. that way it's not "antisocial".

they are right it is distracting and limits one of ur senses but its just like jogging while listening to music or listening to loud music while driving. just another risk your gonna have to take to enjoy this luxury. enjoy

Same here, I go skiing to chill out completely and be "one wiht the mountain." I don't want music distracting me from what I'm doing, whether it be socializing wiht people on teh lift or tearing up some pow. I am wayyy against skiing with music.

yeah man, just don't play it super super loud. I keep mine loud enough to hear but quiet enough to talk to people. Just keep your head on a swivel when you ride and you'll be fine

makes sense, but it's so boring listening to people talk unless they have something good to say, so i just rode with one ear in today so i could somewhat hear when they were talking to me.

i love skiing with music, especially on powder days. i get into a rythym and just tear it up. I also forget about being scared a lot with music on which is a good thing sometimes.

it shouldnt matter, when it comes down to it...u should be looking uphill anyways if carving across an open hill where there is a high risk of someone going kamakozi(sp?) on your ass...

I listen to it pretty quietly so that even when I'm on the lifts I can still talk with my friends. If you can talk to people and still hear them and your music it's pretty much the perfect volume. But on weekday when I'm by myself and the hill is super un-crowded I turn it up

I can only listen to music in the park. When i'm in the BC, it distracts me too much.

you definately need to be careful. my second day skiing with music put an middle aged man on his ass. the music(full blast) basicly put me into day dreams, which resulted in hiting some guy head on.

sometimes i ski with earphones, but most of the time i think it takes away from the experience, you can't hear the snow schussing under you, or nature and i usually like to chat it up on the lift.
As for the dude that said you can't break an Ipod if it has a case, not true at all. I have a friend you ate it big time and broke his. Just thought I'd let you know.

i tried skiing with headphones a couple of times but it failed the boat float test.
i have super-open headphones and i had them on low but even so i found them more distracting than anything else.
