I live in Vancouver and I say fuck the olympics. Sure it would be nice to see the olympics in Canada but not if it means Whistler gets even more raped by developers than it already has. Having it in the international spotlight for 2 weeks surely won't help either. Besides, other than hockey all the olympics have to offer right now are a bunch of whack ass events like the two man luge. It would be sick if skiing halfpipe and or slopestyle was in the olympics by then but even if it was I'd rather watch it on TV and have it somewhere else than sacrifice Whistler. Lastly, the dumbass olympic planners want to use the local Vancouver mountains for some of the skiing events, which is retarded because at this rate they won't have snow at all by 2010.

I dont think there would be many events in whistler becuase it is too far from the host city, but Im not sure

yeah- one of the reasons snowbird alta and the big cottonwood resorts didnt host any events in salt lake was due to the roads up the canyon. the sea to sky highway is like 10 times as long, and just as slow. i doubt theyd put any event there.

the city is divided and the ioc isnt gonna give it to a city that doesnt want it. personally i dont really want it here. i cant afford 500 bucks for a hockey game...hell i can barely afford a canucks game, so ill be watching it on tv either way. and when the games come, prices of everything will go up and stay up when they leave. yada yada yada...bc's money is better spent on other shit like healthcare and such

dude, if you plan on living in vancouver long term, the olympics are a miraculous boon. at first i was opposed because of how it would disrupt the cozy whistler lifestyle i am accustomed to, but i've done some thinking and have changed my mind.

whistler will expand and grow regardless of olympic influences. it's a matter of when and not if. admitedly i am opposed to the development of the calaghan lake area but there's plenty of other places to sled anywho. any develpments the olympics will bring to whistler will happen anyways within an additional 5 years. with the olympics, bc residents will actually save tax dollars as the income generated by the olympics will finance the much needed highway repairs on the sea to sky.

also, highway infrastructure around vancouver will be drastically improved. as any town of former olympic glory will attest to, the tourist boon which will last for the coming 10 years is pricelessly valuable. billions of dollars will be generated in provincial income. a legacy of sporting complexes will be built for generations. plus i get to watch canada win the gold in hockey again.

people who bitch and moan about health care dollars and etc are self centered ninnies who don't look at the big picture and who don't understand the entire financial impact of the olympics. money will be scarce for the years coming in, but afterwards there will be an ample deluge to compensate.

the main downside is the unstoppable expansion of whistler and it's further turning towards the corporate downside. but's it's inevitable and will happen anyways. the highway must be repaired and the facilities will eventually have to be built, why not get someone else to pay for it? sure traffic will suck for two or three weeks, but overall the benefits FAR outweight the detractors. if larry campbell weren't such a blubbering idiot and gordon not such a drunk, we'd capitalize on the weakeness of the austrian government and steal the olympics for ourselves.

frankly, in my opinion, people who are opposed to the olympics are generally uninformed or are informed but are being selfish (not that there's anything wrong with that, that's just how it is).

i rest my case.

I lived and worked near Salt Lake during thier Olympics. Salt Lake iteself and the surrounding freeways got a major overhaul. It's now so much easier to get around.

I worked at Snowbasin, and that mountain was in dire need of some improvements. They got them, a new access road, parking lots, lodges and the like and didn't have to pay for much of it. (Given there was the whole scandal thing, but whatever) I was there earlier this season and there were a few more people around, but not too bad. Mostly the locals are just reaping the benefits of a huge super nice mountian with nobody there.

Whistler is already world-famous. I had dreams of going from the first time I ever picked up a ski magazine. I don't know that the Olympics would really change how many people would actually go, especially if it doesn't host many events because of the distnace from Vancouver. My limited experience in Vancouver illustrates that something needs to be done with the road system around there. I'm not familiar enough to make a really accurate judgement, but I was confused as all get out the time I drove through.

If you're bitching about event pricing. It's worth it to be able to sit in the stands at an Olympic event. The engergy of the spectators and athletes at the Olympics is so amazing. It's not like any other athletic competition I've ever been to.
