Silverton Mountain Ski Area

did anyone else read the article in the December issue of Freeskier about this place? it sounds really dope...only one like it in the United States...one double chair lift will carry people 2000 vertical feet...2 options from there...344 acres of ultra steep terrian that drops back toward the lift on the front of the mountain...they are still negotiating acess to another 1300 acres of steep, open, cliffed out terrian...the biggest and burliest terrian as anything in the US...no groomers...just the real big mountain experience...it does not say when it is going to open...but this looks to be the most bad-ass backcountry in the US...but with a lift a little bit of the way up...has anyone else heard about this place...if you havent you need to check it out...FO SHO...

but man this is the only REAL MOUNTAIN in the US that is going to be open to the public...every other ski place in the US is built on a hill...this is on a MOUNTAIN...

this place will be like nothing in the country, specifically anything on the east coast. got to drive through silverton this summer...god the town is bad...anyhow...the terrain will be sweet. who give a crap if it only have one 2 person chair,. when only 425 people will be skiing there a day and you can hike to basically anything you can see, it will always kick ass. sort of like berthoud, only on a much bigger scale. suck berthoud closed and silverton is so far away. in the picture in freeskier, if you can see it, you can hike to it and ski it. it will be sick.

Silverton is deftly one of the cooler big mountain places out in the lower 48. But after you factor all the extra pricing for a guide, gear, travel cost and tickets it's just a little less than a Alaska Valdez trip.
I'm not saying it's not worth or I don't want to go, but there are other big mtn skiing in the rest of lower 48 that can be just as good.

Quality bump!!!!

Personally I think Silverton is way over-hyped. Because of its aspect, unless it has just snowed in generally has really crusty snow. They randomly don't open, especially when it snows, which is super inconvenient since there are no other resorts in the near vicinity. Also, the bus shuttle system back to the base is REALLY slow. Expect to do 6 laps in a day max - which would be reasonable for heli skiing, but not for tracked out pow.

But your not heli skiing. Your paying something like $130 a day to ski from a chairlift. Thats roughly $20 a run, well worth it when you are skiing with a guide. Its never crowded, and I have never skied or heard of anybody skiing tracked out snow all day.

If I went here I'd probably just lap the chair all day. Doing something else sounds like too much hiking and too much of a bitch.

If I was forced to hire a guide I'd demand someone in a snow mobile take me to the ill drop ins so I don't have to hike.

Good point about the guide. I guess it has a certain appeal for some groups of people. I have a sled and have been skiing backcountry for years with a strong group of people, I'm not really looking to pay for someone to show me around. And if I were, I'd want to be somewhere without a chairlift.

I have to disagree about the crowds though. I've experienced 30 minute lift lines throughout the day, and know that others have too.

The other thing that makes places like this hard for me to appreciate is the commitment to booking ahead of time for guided skiing. Obviously its part of the game for any heli, cat or guided skiing operations, but especially in Colorado you are really gambling on snow conditions.

You actually can ski Silverton this winter if you wanted to, you've been able to for a while, but you need to call and reserve. I've been there twice, once in the summer and once in the winter. Silverton itself is probably my favorite town ever, and if you take the old train into town it's even better. One of the only places where you'll get a true experience of the 'old west.' Definitely an awesome area and if you shell out the money to reserve, it will be one of the greatest skiing experiences of your life

If you go to Silverton be prepared to hike. Even the not a lot of hiking ways you can do it still require a decent bit of hiking. That being said awesome experience and the Heli drop is totally worth it

I've been to Silverton twice now and it's one of my favorite places. No nonsense, just hardcore shredding outside of a one-horse town. If you're a park rat that doesn't really know how to ski, you shouldn't go here because you might actually get yourself killed.

The hike to the billboard is the gnarliest fucking hike I have EVER done. At one point your scaling this spine-ridge-thing on iced over rocks, holding on to a rope to keep yourself from falling down hundreds of feet. A week before my second trip there a woman died by falling off the ridge. Evidently she tumbled for about 1,000 feet.

It is NOTHING like MRG, and nothing like anything else in the country. Basically semi-lift accessed backcountry skiing. Chutes, drops, spines, steeps, trees, etc and DEEP ASS SNOW if you hit it right. If you're a strong skier check it out for sure. It's beyond worth it, and the people there are super, super nice.

Not to mention the billboard is at 13,000 feet. Finishing that hike is the best feeling, even though your quads are on fire, and you haven't even started skiing yet.

I can't believe no one has mentioned that Warren Miller Film that had a segment on Silverton, so good! (I can't remember if it is Children of Winter or playground) Those early 2000's movies are always great.
